That's how close the Sheridan Bruins came to a national title last March, losing to Humber in a thriller in the national final. It's something that sits in the back of the four returning starters from last year's Ontario champi onship and national finalist squad. The Bruins will mix experience and youth for another shot at the top for the 2001-02 season. The team will return with their two top scorers from a year ago -- senior point guard Elvis Dennis and forward Hugh Bent. Second year guards David Martin and Vance King will add to the well balanced Bruin attack. The club lost the intimidating presence of cen ter Ricardo Edwards who graduated. Edwards will be missed on the court but not off it, as he will stay on as assistant coach, joining head coach Jim R ack and assistants Leroy Cassanova and Nick Davis. The staff will look to a talented group of fresh men to provide some offence and defence. Size is the key word with five players over 6'4". Jordan Morrison looked impressive in the Bruins 104-79 exhibition win over Medicine Hat on Saturday. Morrison scored 18 points -- 16 in the second half -- along with nine rebounds and five steals. "He was the big spark for us in the second half," said Flack. Elvis Dennis led the way with 23 points, five rebounds and five steals. Hugh Bent added 16 points with seven rebounds. Vance King scored 17 and David Martin added 16 as the Bruins used a ferocious 35-1 second half run to turn a 14-point deficit into a 22-point lead and eventual win. In earlier action, the Bruins pasted Redeemer 92-47. Vance King and Elvis Dennis each scored 19 and Hugh Bent chipped in 12 and Jordan Morrison nine. The Bruins certainly have the talent to repeat as provincial champions and another shot at the nationals. "This team will only reach its potential if the returnees lead the way and the new guys follow," said head coach Flack. The Bruins continued their exhibition season yesterday at Niagara College and head to Montreal this weekend for the always competitive Dawson tourney. There was a huge display of enthusiasm and school spir it as the students assembled around their school banners and picnic tables. Each school had a strong contingent of support not only from their teachers/coaches but from other school staff, school administration and parents.
