"We practise four times a week, so I don't get to many (TFC) games," says Lazar Stefanovic. The nine-year-old and three fellow players who started their soccer careers at the Oakville Soccer Club --Noah Barna-Zuzic, Philip Biondich and Matthew Dovale -- may not have to worry about that much longer. They will not only get the chance to see Toronto's Major League Soccer team play, they'll share a field after being accepted into the Kia Toronto FC Academy. For Barna-Zuzic, whose favourite player is TFC's Sebastian Giovinco, that's a great opportunity in itself. But it also gives the players access to high-level training at Ontario's only professional academy. "It's exciting," Dovale said. "I want to be a professional." The Oakville players were among the 14 selected for the academy following a four-month tryout process that brought hundreds of players from across the province to vie for one of the coveted spots. Despite the intense competition for limited spots, Barna-Zuzic took it in stride. "I wasn't that nervous," he said. Dovale didn't have to go through the same selection process after being recommended by John Moreira of Euro Star Keeper Academy. But the St. Joseph's Catholic School student still had to impress the TFC Academy evaluators enough to earn one of the two keeper positions up for grabs. Biondich is looking forward to the opportunity to play against other top competition. "I like competing against the other teams, the stronger ones," he said. "They're very focused and coachable," Michael Scholz of RVDL Soccer Academy said of Biondich and Barna-Zuzic, who trained with him prior to joining Toronto FC Academy. "You can see them taking things on board and then applying them. That's what really separates the cream from the rest." -- Herb Garbutt p r os of tomo r r ow ?
