Your phone rings, and in the moment it takes to hear the great news from someone you probably don't even know, your life changes. A dream for a brighter future comes true. Dreams - that's what the Community Foundation of O akville's (CFO) Great Dream Home Lottery is all about for thousands of ticket buyers every fall. And all year long, dreams unify thousands more donors, vol unteers and people who ben efit from the work of our town's community founda tion. Behind many important initiatives in Oakville, the CFO is quietly at work, con tributing to the quality of life in our community - now and for generations to come. You see the effect of the CFO in healthcare and social servic es, in arts and culture, in pro grams for youth and in the environment. Because the CFO - like all community foundations works behind the scenes, people often aren't aware of it, or what it means to our community. There are 110 such foundations across Canada and measured by its assets last year, Oakville's is the eleventh largest. Community foundations are independent of each other and set up as non-profit organizations to support pro grams of importance close to home. For Oakville, this means funding for other charities big and small from the Oakville Trafalgar M emorial Hospital or the United Way of Oakville, to the Kerr Street Ministry or Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation. So how does it work? Through the guidance of a volunteer board of directors, the CFO is building perma nent funds to benefit Oakville. It offers a full range of donation alterna tives and helps donors at all levels to invest in the health and vitality of our town. The Foundation addresses Oakville's short-term and future needs and focuses on the big picture. A community foundation collects donations o f any amount from individuals, businesses and other founda tions and pools dollars in permanent endowment funds. These funds are invested to generate a con stant stream of earnings for grants to a wide range of local community programs. For donors the advantages of making gifts to the com munity foundation include flexibility in how to direct a donation, maximum tax sav ings and the benefit of expe rienced pooled fund manage ment. Last year, the CFO, its donors and programs made donations of more than $800,000 to initiatives that enhance life in our commu nity. Most members of the Oakville community have either used a service funded by the CFO or know some one who has. In the simplest sense, the foundation brings together people who want to make a difference in the community and people who need a helping hand. That's a dream come true.
