Residents reminded to power down for Earth Hour Saturday Area residents are once again being asked to switch off their lights and join the annual global movement that is Earth Hour on Saturday (March 19). The event, which is intended to symbolize a participant's commitment to the planet, takes place from 8:30-9:30 p.m. "Earth Hour is a great reminder of the importance of energy conservation," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton in a press release. "I encourage everyone to participate in Earth Hour and energy conservation efforts all year long. This is one of the many ways we are creating a cleaner, greener Oakville." Town staff said energy conservation and environmental stewardship is a year-round priority for Oakville. They noted the Town will be joining the Earth Hour campaign by turning off all non-essential lighting at its facilities where possible, without compromising public safety or interfering with services, to reduce energy demand during the hour.
