INTERNATIONAL \C E N T R E Toys for Tots delivers for the kids By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Hundreds of children who may have otherwise gone without this Christmas will find some thing special under their tree this year thanks to the annual Toys For Tots campaign. During the program's launch last week,, all the community partners gathered at the Dundas and Trafalgar Road Canadian Tire store to accept $40,000 worth of Toys from the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families. "As cold as we are standing here today, on Christmas day we'll have a warm feeling in our heart," said Burlington Salvation Army Envoy Terry Clark. In addition to Canadian Tire and the Oakville and Burlington Salvation Army, Toys For Tots has also proven to be a labour of love for both Halton Regional and Peel Regional Police plus Caledon OPP and Orangeville Police. Halton Honda also donat ed special Toys For Tots vehicles. "This is an excellent program for the number of partners in the community to assist children," said Halton Regional Police Deputy Chief Gary Crowell. "It is an opportunity to help those less fortunate." Dundas and Trafalgar Road Canadian Tire associate dealer Mark Healy, said he is proud that the stores are the official collec tion sites for cash and Canadian Tire money to benefit Toys For Tots. "Our goal is to make sure every child gets a Christmas gift," he said. "It's nice to see everyone involved. It's a rewarding pro gram." Toys For Tots was initiated by Peel Regional Police several years ago and last Christmas it moved west where Halton Regional Police picked up the ball. "Everyone involved is really excited about our second year and it will even bigger this year," said Constable Chantal Verrier, who is spearheading the effort for Halton Regional Police. Lisa Gibson, the spokesperson for Canadian Tire's head office, said her company has been involved with Toys For Tots since 1997 and explained how gratify ing it is to see it really catch on with community partners. Tim Howlett, Community Service Co-ordinator for the Salvation Army's Oakville Community Church, explained that last year, Toys For Tots served 500 Oakville families and this year, with the economy in trouble, he's anticipating many more recipients. (Clients can reg ister through Ontario Works or by calling 827-5324.) "We're expecting a lot more. I hope we have enough toys," said Howlett, who added that this year's "toy shop" will be located at 530 Lyons Lane, the site once occupied by Oakville Hydro. The Canadian Tire Foundation for Families is a charitable organ ization with a single clear objec tive: to help families when they need it most.
