Photo by Graham Paine, Metroland Media Group May Court Club turns 60 By Katelyn Dingman Communities, whether small or large, rely on volunteers to raise funds that are filtered back into the region through social programs. The May Court Club of Oakville is a not-for-profit volunteer women's organization with deep roots in Halton and on Friday, April 15, volunteers celebrated the organization's 60th anniversary by doing what they do best - fundraising. The fundraising event, coined Let's Get This Party Started, was an opportunity for members of the May Court Club of Oakville and locals to commend what the club has accomplished in the past six decades with a buffet-style meal, a live auction and dancing. "It was really a fun event. Everybody really enjoyed themselves, future May Court Club president Cindy Popp said. "We've been around for 60 years and our members work really, really hard to give back to the community and this has been going on since the time the club was born." Popp noted that money raised during the 60th anniversary event will go towards the May Court Club's scholarship program, geared to well-rounded students with a greater than average financial need that have shown an interest in volunteering their time to the community. Last year, volunteers with the May Court Club raised $85,500 that was donated to more than 20 scholarship recipients. Funds were raised at the Let's Get This Party Started event through ticket-sales, donations and the live auction, where attendees had the opportunity to bid for four all-inclusive trips, one membership to the Oakville Golf Club and a jewelry gift certificate. The Oakville club has earned a reputation in Halton Region for addressing community needs before they become causes and initiating projects that are still in existence today including the first child-care center in Oakville, the Carey House and the Miriam Group. In addition to fundraising for organizations that provide essential services, the May Court Club volunteers also run their own programs and initiatives. The women initiated the Lunch Box Program, the Anti-Bullying Puppet Program and the Education Scholarship Program in addition to running the Nearly New Shop on Kerr Street. "We have really lovely items on sale for reasonable prices," Popp said, adding that the shop is run by volunteers and it is where the money to support charitable agencies comes from. In addition to the work the May Court Club volunteers put into raising funds for the community, Popp noted that there is also a large social component. "People work hard and play hard," Popp said.
