Humane society has always been all for the animals continued from p.12 Street, where its first employee, Mr. Leggatt, was paid $5 a month and 25 cents for every animal he cared for daily. His pay increased to $15 a month in 1938, and a year later, the number of animals Leggatt looked after also climbed, so they moved to a different location, Millan said. "They moved the humane society to a barn (Col. Seth Pepler's Barn) on Morrison Road for a number of years. The property was owned by R.B. Lawes, who, in 1939, actually became our first animal cruelty officer," said Millan. In 1950, the OHS was incorporated and renamed the Oakville and District Humane Society (ODHS). Also that year, an American woman named Mary Martin came to Oakville and visited ODHS on Morrison Road. She was "quite impressed with the society" and left a $10,000 bequest to the shelter, Millan said, which was used to purchase its next site at 445 Maple Ave. from Lorne Lawes for $1. This was the group's first haven, which was named the Mary Martin Memorial Shelter. The organization changed its name again in 2010, to what it is now, and its current building at 445 Cornwall Rd. was built in 1968 and opened by then-mayor F . McLean Anderson. "The address on Maple Avenue actually got changed to Cornwall Road when it (Cornwall) was put right through the land. We've been here ever since," said Millan. Besides the name and location changes, the group has expanded its existing building to include the Marjorie M. Robinson Memorial Wing, two cat-socialization rooms, dog adoption wings, an education room and a sprinkler and water supply system. "We're a donor-funded organization, so any renovation is all about donors giving to an expansion. We actually have four portables currently sitting on this property," said Millan, noting three of them house animals and the other is an office space. "For disease management, we use our portables to simulate separate airflow perspective because we were closed for four months in 2011 due to ringworm." On average, the Oakville-based shelter takes in 4,000 to 5,000 domestic and wild animals every year. OMHS had a population of 2,997 domestic animals at the end of 2015, but now has close to 200 in its care and has a capacity of 300 (250 cats, 45 dogs and five small animals). The humane society also investigates animal abuse and neglect and promotes welfare through education and responsible pet ownership. With close to 50 employees and more than 300 volunteers today, OMHS is looking to the future, not just for the number of animals it houses, but also "to better serve our community" and its needs, Millan said, as education is a key focus for the group. Moving to a fourth and bigger location, a more "campus-type environment" across eight to 10 acres, is in the plans so it can offer numerous educational programs for children, initiatives for its youth volunteers, more counselling to help people keep their pets and adding another cat behaviour course, among other suggestions. Some of the May 12 gala proceeds will go to portable structural renovations and a new site. "Going forward, we really need to look at some sustainability. What can we do to meet the growing needs of our community? We can't always have our hand out, but we have to be able to offer things back to our community," said Millan. "I would like to thank our community for the support of the 80 years. We're looking towards its support for the next 80 years." CATSINO ROYALE, open to guests aged 19 and older, takes place Thursday, May 12 at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd., from 6-11:30 p.m. Tickets cost $150 each and include a complimentary bar.
