A b le n d o f a rts y a n d e n te r ta in in g By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR Catch a Rising Star aptly describes the revue now playing at Theatre Sheridan - a showcase of talent featuring the stars of tomorrow (or so they hope). However, having said that, I understand that the students have select ed specific pieces of music for specific rea sons. This is the show where they really get to shine, choosing their own music, choreo graphing their own dance numbers, select ing their background vocalists and dancers. It's student driven, stu dent performed. So, it's impossible to please all of the people all of the time. And, since the presentations are performed for cri tiquing, it's not surprising that Catch a Ris ing Star leans a little more to "artsy" than it does to "entertaining." However, there is an acceptable balance. For example, some of the more upbeat, crowd-pleasing numbers in Act II were per formed in vignettes or skits, which gave context to the singing and dancing and added an extra element o f interest for the audience. One poignant vignette danced by Zipporah Peddle emphasize the lonely role of the homemaker. Act I also had its share of favourites. David Nevin, for instance, sang a knee-slap ping, toe-tapping number at the beginning of the show, and Jennifer Stewart presented a great rendition of Madonna's Vogue with dancers and back-up singers all dressed in black, striking poses and performing the once in -vogue arm movements. Mark Huculak wowed the audience with his fancy foot-work in an audience-pleasing tap dance, and Ryan W ilson's dance number was equally impressive. Even the song that, as far as I'm concerned, has the worst lyrics of the supposedly enlightened '90s - Hit Me Baby One More Time - garnered apprecia tive applause. But it was David Lopez and his six male back-up singers who were the hit of Act I as they harmonized to the ever popular Kiss From a Rose. Act II had some equally entertaining numbers, notably Shannon Kingsbury in a cute little ditty about the ups-and-downs of romance, and Yasin Sheikh with his harem of four, singing and dancing to Mambo Number Five. My guess would be that Erin Heagle and Jamie M cKnight were the hit of the second-half as they sang a beautiful ren dition of the popular Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli song The Prayer. As I watched the dance numbers through out the evening I soon discovered a common thread - Lindsay Thomas. She seemed to appear in most o f them. Since the stars of each number selected their own back-up singers and dancers, it became apparent that the "rising stars" of the evening felt the same way I did about Thom as's dancing. She certainly stood out in each number and her featured dance, with M ark Huculak and Noah Henne, was spectacular. I even caught my breath with a few o f her jum ps and leaps. But her supporting dancers man aged to catch her. As with most musicals at Theatre Sheri dan, the evening ended with an up-beat com pany number where members of the cast dance through the audience and involve the theatregoers in a little hand clapping and chorus singing. Catch a Rising Star is an opportunity to see quality artistic and entertaining dancing and singing in an intimate theatre setting. It continues W ednesday through Saturday until Feb. 19th in Theatre Sheridan's fully licensed cabaret style theatre. For tickets or information, call the box office at 815-4049.
