Oakville youths construct `not-yet-on-the-market' home In our neighbourhood, at 1425 Abbeywood Dr., we have 28 townhouses and a variety of residents. We have a good number of youngsters of grade-school age on our street, so sometimes that can make for very busy streets, what with hockey , soccer, playing catch, riding bikes and throwing hoops.... Go Raptors! There is a couple of hoops set up on neighbourhood properties and the kids love that. Or often there's a good road hockey game that has time outs... for cars, or dinner. But the other day I saw something so unusual, I had to turn around and go back to check it out. It was none of the above, but involved the help of a few kids and some adults. I think we may have discovered a future architect in our midst. One of the boys, Jordan Wolters, 12, and his friend, Ethan Cox, 10, and Jordan's younger brother Aaron Wolters, 9, surprised me. This fun began when a nextdoor neighbour had something delivered in several very large boxes. How many readers remember crawling into a cardboard box with the flap up? With permission, Jordan and his little brother and friend, began turning the boxes into a pretend clubhouse. Mom, Alex Gazza, was good for the tape and scissors, of course. Jordan, the architect and idea guy, was so creative, they made it two storeys with windows made of clear plastic wrap and even designed the inside so that it had two rooms, a TV and some shelves and drawers drawn on the wall. Two small benches in the back room provided additional space for friends in this elaborate new, not-yet-on-the-market, Oakville home. The workmanship and idea were awesome. All I could think of was how quickly we forget youngsters' capabilities. Often adults complain (those who I'm sure were never children themselves). However, these children are active, imaginative, competitive, and this group is very polite and open to suggestions and comments. My experience is they are respectful of where they are and to whom they are speaking. I am so very proud of my young friends, and neighbours, and believed this local building event should be shared with our community. Who knows, they may be back one day developing homes in our area.
