www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 27, 2016 | 24 Loyola boys dominate Halton Jr. final Undefeated Hawks romp to victory over Titans to capture Tier 1 title By Kevin Nagel Beaver sports editor The Loyola Hawks junior boys' soccer team has the talent to succeed and the coach to make sure the players take high school sports seriously. The combination was on full display Tuesday on a hot, sunny afternoon at North Park. The Hawks completed an undefeated season by dumping the Holy Trinity Titans 6-1 in the Halton Tier 1 final. The Titans, 3-3 and fourth in the Richardson Division during the regular season, were overmatched Tuesday after upsetting Volpe Division regular-season champion Bishop Reding (5-1) and Richardson Division runner-up Christ the King (4-11) in quarter- and semifinal play. The Hawks won 5-0 in the regular-season matchup between the two teams. Tuesday, Loyola scored the only two goals it would need in the first 15 minutes and led 3-0 by halftime. When the Hawks made some substitutions to start the second half, the Titans scored their only goal before Loyola struck for three more late in the game to finish the scoring. Jake Carenza scored three goals and Adewumi Aladetimi contributed two. The game before, Aladet- imi had three goals and Carenza, two, in the Halton semifinal 6-3 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas. "We've been swapping them back and forth," Loyola coach Anthony Costa said after the game. "We have played a system with a lone striker, sometimes two up top. I told them, if you can both connect, that would be great." Ten minutes in, Aladetimi took the ball unchallenged from the corner and hit the top corner of the Holy Trinity goal. A missed header in the box by a Titans defender allowed Carenza to boot a gift goal for a 2-0 lead five minutes later. Another four minutes passed before Aladetimi dribbled through the middle and scored the final goal of the half. Carenza scored two more goals late in the second half, one on a free kick, to go along with teammate Josh DeFreitas's marker that ended the scoring. Holy Trinity's goal at the opening of the second half came on a juicy rebound that Dylan Serpa deposited into the Loyola net. Carenza, one of the many players on Loyola who plays rep for the Oakville U16 A team, said the reasons the Hawks lost in the semis last year but won it all this year were simple. "High quality players and an organized coach," he said, describcontinued from p. 23 team that went 5-1. "Every game we saw development. We'd see them pull out high-level skills that we hadn't taught or practised. It was this acquisition of skill out of nowhere. They were learning on McMaster tournament, a 1-0 loss earlier this season. "They are a really good group," she said of her players. "They've come back before but I don't think it was in the cards today. I'm not surprised we're here, though." She was particularly proud of Sebastien Guerrieri, who'll move to senior next year. "He's a really solid striker and a key motivator," she said. "He gets (his teammates) going when they get down." As for Loyola, the future is bright according to firstyear coach Costa, who is on a one-year teaching contact at Loyola and doesn't know if he'll be back. "They're going to be a powerhouse if they continAbdul Sharani (dark jersey) of the Loyola Hawks and Gianfranco Mirto of the Holy Trinity Titans go after ue to buy in and have selfa loose ball in Tuesday's Halton Jr. Tier 1 boys soccer final at North Park. The advantage OT has is a wellestablished program that puts its senior team in a position to play at OFSAA and challenge for a medal each year. "That tradition attracts a lot of people to play rugby," Elliot said. "(OFSAA) is definitely a goal, even in junior. You want to build up to that." "The ultimate goal is to win OFSAA," Easson added. With a senior team that is ranked among the top five in the province this year and a junior team that Schaffler said is the deepest he's had in years, that could be a possibility in the next couple of years. "The group that is moving up is pretty strong," Schaffler said. "We're in pretty good shape."
