www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 3, 2016 | 16 continued from p.6 autism and their families does not inspire confidence this will end well. Good for Mayor Rob Burton for recognizing this and doing something about it with his calling for the provincial government to amend its policy regarding children getting the treatment they require, especially after the age of five. Finally Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn has come out of hiding to publicly state his views, although I have to wonder if his brief column in last Friday's Oakville Beaver was written for him by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, much as she had to answer for MPP Bob Delaney (Mississauga- Grandfather IBI for those over the age of five Treatment will not be improved Streetsville), who called the police to have them go to the home of on an autistic child's mother when she could not get a direct response from him after repeated requests for answers. The Premier had to, quite pathetically, convince him to apologize when he failed to see the error of his ways in a completely over-the-top reaction to one of his constituents' issue. Without a hint of sarcasm Mr. Flynn, the Wizard of Oz has more credibility and inspires more confidence than your government when it comes to managing any matter that deserves careful attention to the hopes and futures of Ontarians. You'll forgive one for not having an ounce of faith in your government doing the right thing, as your record of mismanagement on all files is legendary, and continues to grow with each passing day. Mr. Flynn, is it lost on you that the only group of people toting the party line on this issue is your Liberal colleagues in the Ontario legislature? Even some of the "experts" cited in your government's explanations for the rationale of limiting IBI (Intensive Behavioural Intervention) have claimed they were misrepresented in their recommendations and have shied away from endorsing what you are doing. Finally, after record deficits, wasteful spending and one scandal after another, you're willing to play chicken with the futures of children with a severe learning impediment? For goodness sake, for once, just once, have your Liberal government do something right and grandfather in the IBI treatment for these children over the age of five. Your party's long list of wastefulness needs no further chronicling here. We all live it every day. Sadly, even this issue is beyond the scope of doing the right thing for you and your scandalplagued Liberal party at Queen's Park. For shame Mr. Flynn, for shame. Robert Mason, Oakville Re: Improving autism services for children and youths by Kevin Flynn, MPP , Oakville Beaver, May 27, 2016 The irony of MPP Kevin Flynn's assertion that others are spreading misinformation is so thick you could walk on it. In fact, some of the government's claims about what is happening based on their changes to autism services makes it seem as though they're living on a different planet. Mr. Flynn claims children aren't being removed from services, but the discharge letters parents across Ontario are receiving prove that wrong. Mr. Flynn seems to think kids will get "the critical services they need." He needs to look up the definition of intensity. In the case of children with autism, `intensive' means 20-40 hours of therapy each and every week of the year. The bait-and-switch ABA program the government is offering as a replacement takes the zero away. It will only deliver 2-4 hours per week. As for the change to "every week," that will become two 12-week blocks per year. A 90 per cent cut to hours/week and a 50 per cent cut in weeks doesn't come anywhere near `intensive.' Mr. Flynn's government has delivered the worst slap in the face by simply moving kids from one waitlist to another. The government has yet to strike an implementation committee for the new program, and by its own admission will not have it fully rolled out until 2018. If Mr. Flynn can convince you that this means "easier access to services and shorter wait times," he may try to sell you shares in a gold mine at Trafalgar and Lakeshore as well. Once you understand "misinformation by some" really means "misinformation by government," you don't really need to read the rest of Mr. Flynn's column.
