HDSB administrator honoured A Halton public school board senior administrator has won a provincial honour. Gerry Cullen, superintendent of facility services for the Halton District School Board (HDSB), recently received the Ontario Association for School Business Officials (OASBO) McCordic Award. The honour recognizes outstanding contributions to the service of school business. It was established in 1980 to honour the contributions of W. J. McCordic, a long-time educator in Ontario. Specifically, the award recognizes service with a school board or the ministry of education. Cullen has served on the OASBO executive, including serving as its president. ".... To be singled out among the many members that work in education is very special. As with most organizations of this nature, the networking and information gained from other members is the real reason it's so successful." Position both challenging & rewarding Cullen said he's never experienced the same two days in Halton, making his position challenging and rewarding. "Working with teams of people to design and open new schools is exciting; keeping existing schools operating and upgrading them never ends," he said. "Changes in the education sector and growth in Halton will continue to provide the facilities department with lots to do for the foreseeable future." Butterflies released from Woodside Library Butterflies were being released into the wild Wednesday (June 8) by Oakville Public Library, in partnership with the Town of Oakville and Oakvillegreen Conservation Association. Residents were invited to attend the public release of the captiveborn butterflies from 10:30-11 a.m. at the Woodside Branch at 1274 Rebecca St. It followed a display of painted lady caterpillars that were available so residents could observe their transformation to butterflies over the past few weeks. They will also have a chance to learn about the importance of supporting pollinator species. "Pollinators including species like butterflies and bees, both of which play a critical role in our environmental and agricultural systems," according a Oakville Public Library media advisory. "Unfortunately, many pollinator species are in decline. "As such, the Town works in partnership with Oakvillegreen and Oakville Public Library to support educational and stewardship programs directed at increasing pollinator habitat and raising awareness," stated the advisory. The release of the butterflies at the local library branch coincides with Canadian Environment Week, which is recognized June 5-11. 11 | Thursday, June 9, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Gerry Cullen Interlocking Tumblestone, Retaining Walls, Garden Installation, Sodding & Excavating, Call for FREE Estimate SEXUAL ASSAULT & VIOLENCE INTERVENTION SERVICES (SAVIS) OF HALTON · Free confidential counselling · Free 24-hour support line - call: 905.875.1555 905.825.3622 · Toll free: 877.268.8416 · www.savisofhalton.org plus more (905) 827-8158 · www.rogerslandscaping.org WIN A $250 Gift Card to your favourite Dorval Crossing Store!
