B4 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, March 22, 2000 OAKVILLE CPR BLITZ 2000 ON SATURDAY, APRIL 1ST ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT The best of Second City ` 2000 Years and StillNo Flying Cars'offers Oakville the best ofSecond City revues from Chicago, Detroit and Toronto By Carol Baldwin ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR One former Oakville resident moved up the ranks o f The Second City (TSC) to make room for another for mer Oakvillian. TSC comedy theatre recently promoted Geri Hall, for mer W hite Oaks Secondary School student, to its mainstage production, after which Rochelle Wilson, former T. A. Blakelock and Sheridan College student, was selected to take over from Hall on tour. "I'm actually in the touring company right now because there's an open spot. Somebody has been moved up. So, I'm there until the new show starts," says Wilson, obvious ly oblivious to the coincidence. "But when the new show starts, I'll be an understudy again." Hall, also unaware of the Oakville connection, says, "I did the Oakville show the last time we were there. But I just got promoted to the mainstage cast, and we're in rehearsals for the new show." Hall, who originally auditioned for TSC right after high school, got a call-back after her first audition but wasn't accepted into the company at that time. "Then I turned into a waitress for a really long time and lost all of my nerve. I was so young, and it was just too early for me to pursue it. So, I went off and waitressed and got adequately bitter, which is an amazing propellant," she says, explaining that waitressing motivated her to take improv classes with Second City, "because I really enjoyed improv in high school. Then about a year ago, I decided I'd audition, and I got in right away. And it's really fun." Wilson, on the other hand, was "too shy" as a high school student to even consider acting. So, it wasn't theatre that she studied at Sheridan. She was enrolled in general art and photography courses. "After college I went to Europe. I didn't know what I wanted to do. I was there for three months," she says. "I came back and actually got a job offer to work in a bank in Toronto...and I was there for six years." However, during those six years, Wilson diligently attended improv classes at Theatre Sports Toronto until she was confident enough to quit her banking job and try her hand at comedy. Now, she says, the only type o f comedy she hasn't done is stand-up. And although she has been with the TSC company as understudy for all three female parts for the past four or five months, TSC does not occupy all her career time. "I do film and television. I'm also a comedy writer. And I teach improvs," says the versatile young woman. "I'm in a female sketch duo called The Lolas. And we're up for best new group in the first ever Canadian Comedy Awards." Wilson does, however, enjoy her stint with Second City, especially now that she's on the stage more. "It's a lot of fun," she says. "I really think it's a very good show .. .But it's coming to an end soon. They're going to be starting a new touring company show." After the annual auditions or if someone gets promoted, Wilson could move up again from touring to mainstage, The Oakville Chapter H ealth Promotion Com m unitee will be organizing another popular mass CPR "Blitz" training day on Saturday, A pril 1st. The Oakville CPR Blitz 2000 will be held at St Ignatius of Loyola Sec ondary School and in tw o four-hour sessions participants will be taught how to recognize the signs of a heart attack, determ ine if someone is in cardiac arrest and how to perform CPR for an adult. They will also be taught how to help a choking person. At a cost o f $10.00 per person this is an excellent opportunity for family, friends and co-workers to learn CPR. The course is being led by Peter M cM urrough o f the Halton and M ississauga Ambulance Service together w ith an arm y o f trained C PR instructors. Registration for each course is lim ited to 150 people , so it is very im portant to pre-register and not to just turn up on the day. "We could not have kept the cost as low as $10 per person without the support of many organizations including Chapters, Loblaws, IGA, Licks, Sobeys, Tim Hortons, Wal-Mart, Longo's, Costco and Cadbury Chocolates". Every year, over 79,000 C anadians die o f heart attacks and 50% o f these people die suddenly outside o f a hospital. Ideally everyone should leam CPR techniques, especially anyone who has a family member with heart disease. If you w ould like to attend the O akville C PR B litz 2000 on A pril 1st, please mail or fax the registration form below or telephone the Halton Region Office of the Heart and Stroke Foundation on 634-7732. Otherwise, she says, when rehearsals begin for the new touring show, she'll be back to her understudy job again. Although right now, she is understudying for the mainstage company as well as acting with the touring company cast.
