www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 10, 2016 | 8 continued from p.3 Belford said part of the reason she participates in the event each year is because of her mother's involvement in the event, which was well before she was diagnosed with cancer. She said she watched year after year as her mother participated with her friends in the Mamas in Pyjamas group and decided that when she was old enough, she wanted to start the same tradition with her friends and give back to the community. "I just think every year, Relay for Life is an important event to me, obviously because it's personal to me with having had cancer and being a survivor, but it's also just a great way to support other people who will be going through what I've been through myself," she said. Relay for Life unites us in the fight against cancer "I've personally seen the impact fundraising dollars make towards a cancer patient's life, so it's really nice to be able to give back to other people." Belford added Relay is a wonderful event that brings the community together united in a cause. "It's a lot of fun and it makes a huge difference, the fundraising that is done at events like Relay," she said. "It just makes such a difference in so many aspects of a cancer patient's life, with research and providing information about different programs within the cancer society." Her favourite part about the event is the luminary ceremony, which takes place as the sun sets. "It happens later in the evening when it gets dark and they line the track with these beautiful luminary candles to remember people that have fought cancer or who have lost their battle," she said. "It's a sad time of the night, but it's just such a beautiful way to remember why we fundraise and all the reasons to help and give back with Canadian Cancer Society." Luminaries can be purchased for $5 online at www.relayforlife.ca/oakville or at the event. The Oakville Relay for Life is now in its 15th year. As is tradition, it will begin with a survivors' victory lap and end with a fight back ceremony, where participants join together to make a personal commitment to fight back against cancer in their own lives all year long. In 2015 alone, 196,900 Canadians were di- agnosed with cancer. Dollars raised help fund Canada's most promising cancer research to save more lives and ensure no one has to face cancer alone by offering cancer patients and families support services. Belford says the CCS has a great website called Cancer Connection that is helpful for those going through cancer to connect with others who have been there and are now helping to provide support. "I think that's a great resource in helping people deal with cancer because I think it's easy to feel overwhelmed or to feel alone so having connections with other people who have been there is something that can really be beneficial," she said.
