We do this through our high school liaison officers speaking to and educating our teens. We have elementary school liaison officers delivering our BRAVO program, which starts at Grade 6," Albano continued. "We work hand-in-hand with our local licensed establishments by providing training for staff and we promote the dangers of drinking and driving through social media. We also conduct RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) almost nightly throughout the region in the hope of getting the message out there that if you drink and drive, chances are we'll be seeing one another." Albano said so far this year in Halton, 124 people have been charged with impaired driving, three people have been charged with refusing to provide a breath sample and eight have been charged with drug impairment. Halton police have carried out 544 roadside tests, and of those 150 resulted in licence suspensions. Officers have also dedicated 1,200 hours to RIDE spot checks so far this year. "I wish I could attribute all our enforcement activities to our officers discovering these drivers, but I can't. To eradicate impaired driving we must work as a team, which includes MADD, the police and most importantly, concerned citizens everywhere," said Albano. Tonight, we recognize an officer and a citizen who have gone above and beyond in making our community safer." MADD Halton President Lucienne Croghan described Lindsay as a Burlington native, who was previously with the RCMP . He joined the Halton police in 2013 and is currently a member of the Burlington District Response Team where his duties include traffic enforcement and impaired driving en- forcement and education. "I'm shocked and just happy to accept this," said Lindsay after receiving the award. "Impaired driving is a big pet peeve of mine. I spend a significant amount of my day in the District Response Team doing impaired driving enforcement, so it is nice to have that recognized." Lindsay said he looks for erratic driving, but noted a lot can also be learned from pulling an individual over and talking to them. Lindsay says he often sees the same faces. "In my experience, people aren't learning a lesson from the three-day, seven-day, 30-day suspensions." he said. Meanwhile, Cahill, a self-employed IT specialist, was driving through Milton on a sunny Wednesday afternoon in 2015 when he saw a man driving strangely. He contacted 911 and caught the whole thing on his dash camera. The recording, shown during the meeting, showed the vehicle ahead of Cahill weaving all over the road and speeding up and braking suddenly for no apparent reason. Twice, the driver begins to drift out of his lane and nearly collides head-on with oncoming vehicles. Later, in a residential area, he drives up on the curb and runs over a No Parking sign. Cahill stays with the vehicle for all of this and directs police to the driver's location. That driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over 80 mgs. He was found to have four times the legal level of alcohol in his system. The video was evidence in the court case. "I'm very honoured and a little bit embarrassed. I don't really feel like I did anything that warrants this, but I am appreciative," said Cahill. "I have young kids. I have a family that lives in Milton. To me, it was my business. He is driving in my town. Those near-misses you saw, could have been a friend or family member. I just don't feel I had a choice."
