Student assemblies go silent when people tell their stories continued from p.14 "People ask you, `How are you doing?' You learn to just say, `Oh, I'm fine,' said Dean. "Really, inside, you're not fine." Jaymie-Lyne said she wanted to be an aunt to DJ's children and she wanted her children to have their "Uncle DJ." "Since this has happened, I feel such an emptiness," she said. "He is constantly in my thoughts." Jaymie-Lyne said she had never seen her father cry before the accident, but now can't count the number of times she has seen him break down. "It's ripped everyone apart. If someone had just made one choice to not drink and drive, he would still be here." MADD Canada states on average, four people in Canada are killed every day in impaired driving crashes while 175 are seriously injured. In the Blink of an Eye was filmed as part of the charity's 2016-17 School Assembly Program and will be shown in schools across the country beginning in September. MADD Canada CEO Andrew Murie said the stories told in the films, which MADD has been producing each year, has resonated with students. "You can hear a pin drop, especially when the victims' stories are being told," he said. "People are always amazed you can take a robust 500-600 students and all of a sudden it becomes dead quiet because of the seriousness of the messaging. The key part here is what we've shown in the evaluations that it makes them rethink. They rethink about protecting their friends. They rethink about having a strategy to get home. We know that thousands of young people have made a better decision because of this educational program." Murie said there is still lots of work to do. Among the topics touched on by the film is driving while impaired by drugs, which Murie said many people still seem to not understand is just as bad as driving while impaired by alcohol. The subject of driving impaired in the morning following a night of partying also came up in the film. In one of the testimonials, family members note a woman who killed two of their loved ones had been drinking all night, fallen asleep and had still been impaired at 1:30 p.m. when the accident occurred. "With alcohol, the dissipation rates are so slow. Even if you stop drinking at 2 a.m. and sleep for three hours you are still impaired," said Murie. Chambers weigh in on health-care debate The Oakville Chamber of Commerce is calling on the Province to make use of the private sector to improve health care. The Oakville Chamber, in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, has outlined how private-public partnerships could make Ontario's health care industry better in a new report titled, Prescription for Partnership. The report takes a closer look at the role commissioning could play in re-orienting a system, which Chamber staff say too often operates in response to budgetary pressure. Commissioning, it said, allows public and private sector perspectives to be in conversation much earlier in the decisionmaking process. It noted commissioning is a way of focusing the health-care system on outcomes for patients rather than inputs from providers. John Sawyer, president of the Oakville Chamber, said the private sector has long been an active participant in Ontario's health care system. Prescription for Partnership: How New Models of Collaboration in Health Care Can Make Outcomes a Priority is the second of five reports within the Ontario Chamber's yearlong Health Transformation Initiative.
