Red Devils take silver in their first OFSAA boys' rugby final since 1984 By Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver staff The Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils had been in the same position three times before. Each time OT had come up one win short of advancing to the provincial high school rugby nal, although it won bronze medals in 2005, 2007 and 2011. Always a contender at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations boys' rugby tournament, the championship game had eluded OT since 1984, when it won its second of back-to-back championships. So when Oakville Trafalgar beat Peterborough's Adam Scott 18-5 in the semis, it marked the Red Devils' rst trip to the championship game in 32 years. Top-ranked Uxbridge ended the OT's bid for a third provincial title with a 19-5 win, but the Red Devils' return to the championship game did not go unnoticed. "We got some well wishes from other coaches," said OT coach David Schaf er. "They said `it's nice to see you back at this level'. We're hoping to get back again." Uxbridge opened the scoring in the nal, but OT responded with a try of its own by Dominic Johnson to cut the lead to 7-5 by the half. Uxbridge extended its lead to 14-5 in the second. "We had a lot of chances but couldn't quite nish," Schaf er said. "They pressured us into turnovers and they capitalized on all three." The last of those came on the nal play of the game as Uxbridge punched in a nal try. The silver medal still marked a major accomplishment against an experienced Uxbridge team that had four returning Grade 12s in its starting lineup. "You never want to say you're just happy to be there, but the guys were pretty excited to be playing for gold," Schaf er said. "We just ran into a better team on that day." With three-quarters of its roster returning, OT hopes to be the team with that edge in experience next year. "We have a very young team, a good core," Schaf er said. "We should be in good shape next year. We hope to be back there again." The draw had not always been kind to the Red Devils. The previous year a one-point loss in the OFSAA quarternals had prevented them from advancing. This year, things actually fell into place for OT. Ranked fth in the nal Rugby Ontario high school rankings, Oakville Trafalgar earned the third seed at OFSAA. That was much more in line with where OT saw itself, considering it had beaten two of the teams ahead of it in the Ontario rankings. That allowed OT to avoid a top-two opponent until the semi nals, but that didn't mean its route to the nal was easy. After shutting out Sarnia's St. Patrick 33-0 in its opener, OT faced Markham's Bill Crothers, the host. OT scored midway through the opening half and clung to a 5-0 lead the rest of the way. With Crothers threatening in the nal minute, OT's Robbie McNaughton delivered what Schaf er called "one of those perfect hits" to dislodge the ball from Crothers' ball carrier to prevent a try. It was typical of the strong defensive play that saw OT allow only a single try in its rst three games. Even with the 19 points it surrendered in the nal, OT allowed the fewest points of the four semi nal teams. OT continued its strong defensive play in the semis, allowing only a single try against Adam Scott, which had knocked off second-seeded Waterloo Collegiate in the quarters. "On paper we're not the biggest team or the fastest team," Schaf er said. "But the way we played, what the players had developed (were) rugby smarts -- where they're reading what's happening on the eld and able to put that into play."
