www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 23, 2016 | 8 Ham radio enthusiasts prepare to have a Field Day Ham radio enthusiasts will be having a Field Day this coming weekend showing off their disaster and emergency communications capabilities. The South Halton Amateur Radio Emergency Service (SHARES) group is hosting the public demonstration of emergency communications from 2 p.m. on Saturday (June 25) to 2 p.m. on Sunday (June 26). At Halton Regional Centre The event takes place at the Halton Regional Centre, located at 1151 Bronte Rd., in parking lot E, located on the south side of the building. SHARES will set up and operate a radio station capable of communicating with other Hams worldwide. "Over the past few years, the news has been full of reports of Ham radio operators providing critical communications in emergencies including the Japan earthquake and tsunami, Haiti earthquake, Midwest floods, northern forest fires, tornadoes, and other events worldwide," according to a media release from the service. "During Hurricane Katrina, amateur radio -- also called `Ham radio' -- was often the only way people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer `Hams' used their communications skills and radio equipment to help save lives and property." Showcasing emergency communications skills The annual Field Day event helps local Hams and those across the continent practise their emergency communications skills using voice, digital modes, and Morse code, over a 24-hour period, which tests equipment and operator endurance. There are an estimated 50,000 licensed Hams in Canada (650,000 in the U.S. and more than 2.5 million worldwide). Last year, approximately 60,000 hams across North America participated in Field Day activities throughout Canada and the U.S. Event is staged across North America SHARES is part of the Halton Region Emergency Communications Team, which is composed of both amateur and non-amateur volunteer radio groups.
