Barbecue triggers a destructive house fire by Graham Paine Oakville Beaver Staff 11 | Thursday, June 23, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Firefighters battled a house fire at a rural property on Burnhamthorpe Road West in Oakville Saturday (June 18) evening. Crews responded shortly before 8 p.m. Fire officials believe flames from a barbecue ignited a nearby tree and then spread to the two-storey home on Burnhamthorpe, just west of Neyagawa Boulevard. Deputy Fire Chief George Birtig said the fire travelled through the home's eaves and into the attic, where it burned until finally erupting through the roof. "That's why they didn't notice it for some time," said Birtig. "Everything was burning above the home's envelope. So the smoke wouldn't have travelled into the home immediately because all the burning was taking place in the attic." Heavy smoke could be seen from kilometres away and the first arriving crews reported fire on two sides of the home as they arrived on scene. Seven fire trucks with 24 firefighters responded to the scene. A house fire destroyed a home on Burnhamthorpe Road West after a tree caught on fire from the flames of a barbecue.
