The Town of Oakville will receive feedback on materials to be used in the Lakeshore Road Reconstruction and Streetscape Project to start in 2019, until June 30. Public meetings at Town Hall set last week out the contemporary pieces selected, which include granite pavers and curbs, benches, bike rings, roadside bollards, trash/recycling stations and streetlights. They will also be used for other downtown street reconstruction and for the Lakeshore Road Bridge project to start in early 2017. Town staff reported public opinion was mixed on some of the benches, bike racks and streetlight poles, with some concerns over the contemporary style may clash with the downtown's heritage elements. The contemporary theme was chosen over traditional and modern in 2015 after public consultation in the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study. A presentation was also made to the Oakville Heritage Committee highlighting the complimentary role of a contemporary streetscape theme to the downtown's heritage elements. Photos can be seen online and comments accepted by email until June 30. This summer, final selections will go to the Oakville Heritage and Accessibility Advisory committees before going to council in the fall. For more information visit www.oakville.ca.
