www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 24, 2016 | 18 Hospital cashes in on provincial energy incentive by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Halton Healthcare has received more than $920,000 in incentives for the installation of energy-efficient equipment in the construction of the new Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). The money came from the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the Crown corporation responsible for the daily operation of Ontario's electrical system, at a cheque presentation at OTMH Friday (June 17). The funding is thanks to the IESO's Save on Energy High Performance New Construction (HPNC) program. It provides design assistance and incentives for building owners and planners, who design and implement energy-efficient equipment within their new space. Oakville Hydro worked with the hospital to establish a plan and submit an application and information to the IESO. "The scope of this achievement is truly amazing. It is the largest of its kind in Oakville," said Oakville Hydro President and CEO Rob Lister. "Modifications at the hospital include energy-recovery systems, energy-efficient LED lighting and controls, high-efficiency boilers and chillers with variable-volume air-handling and pumping systems and water-reduction systems, all of which are designed to reduce the energy intensity of the facility." "This is enough energy to supply 1,850 homes in Oakville with electricity for a year," said Lister. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said energy conservation programs have tremendously helped Oakville's business community reduce both their environmental footprint and energy bill. He praised the hospital for its decision to support a healthier, greener and more livable Oakville. "Oakville has been agitating with the provincial government for years now to get them to change the building code so we can require developers to build net-zero energy footprint homes," said Burton. "It is a great assistance to our credibility when we see the way the hospital has shown leadership in energy reduction." IESO Vice-President of Conservation and Corporate Relations Terry Young said incorporating energy efficiency into the design of facilities like the new hospital would deliver electricity savings, create a healthier environment and reduce emissions. He encouraged other organizations and businesses to find out what Save on Energy programs can do for them. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn called Oakville Hydro and the Oakville hospital role models for the rest of the province in the area of energy efficiency. Halton Healthcare President and CEO Denise Hardenne noted the Oakville hospital is designed to LEED Silver standards and the HPNC program has recognized it for achieving a Tier 3 level of more than 50 per cent energy savings. "This leads to the question, `What's it all for?' and `What is the value of a building that is 50 per cent more energy efficient than a conventional building," she asked. "First, there is the obvious reduction in utility expense, which for us means we can redirect those resources to direct patient care, which is our core business. Then there is the lower environmental impact. The Town of Oakville prides itself on being one of the most livable places in Canada. Also being a responsible steward demands we use electricity wisely and preserve our environment, but perhaps the most valuable aspect of energy efficiency is conservation for future generations."
