It's a plane! No, it's Oakville's Own Superhero. The Oakville Improv Theatre Company is staging an improvised show of the popular superhero movies that have recently taken over the pop culture universe. It opens today (Thursday) and runs through to Sunday (July 17). The show follows Brad Barkley as he comes to terms with his newly-acquire superpowers and the responsibility he feels to protect his beloved town of Oakville. "The town is in the grip of a series of unusual calamities. Fortunately, mild-mannered Brad Barkley will be there to save the day, using a bizarre set of superpowers (that vary with each performance)," stated a media release. "Will his true love discover his secret? Will he vanquish the villain in time? Will Oakville's guest celebrities survive? Stay tuned to find out." The show's creators are Duncan McKenzie and Gary Pearson (director). Pearson is an award-winning TV writer and producer best known for writing Corner Gas, This Hour Has 22 Minutes and MadTV. He co-created and executive produced the Canadian Screen Award winning Sunnyside with Dan Redican. McKenzie was a co-creator and executive producer of the improvised show Train 48. He was also a script editor, director and writer for History Bites, consultant and writer on That's So Weird and a script editor/writer for new comedy Baroness von Sketchshow. Oakville's Own Superhero will be staged at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre's The Black Box Theatre, 2302 Bridge Rd. The event, held at Oakville's Valleyridge Park, screened Kung-Fu Panda 3 last month for local residents.
