Beloved husband of the late Claire Matthews (nee Brault); father to Chantal, Eddy and Erik; grandfather to James Lee and Kevin Edward Matthews; great-grandfather to Devin; brother to Peter (Etobicoke), Marie-José (Victoria), Pia (Plymouth, UK) and Joseph (Pointe-Claire, QC). Born in the Netherlands, his family immigrated to Canada in 1949. He graduated with a B.Sc in Chemical Engineering at Sir George Williams University in 1957, earned his Engineering degree and worked for Alcan Canada, Wire and Cable Division for 45 years, first in Montreal, then Bracebridge and later Toronto, variously as superintendent, plant manager, and director of technology, the work of which took him all over the world. Retiring in 1997, he focused his energies on learning new languages, gardening, making his own wine, travel and, not least, volunteering his time to several different ministries at his home parish of St. Dominic, Oakville. More recently, he enjoyed an annual ten-day trip as a crew member on the schooner Mary Day, out of Camden, Maine. His plan for next year was to sail through Canada's Northwest Passage. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
