M cCusker Steady defenceman Steve Kinnunen steps over a Niagara player in Major Junior A roller hockey action from last sea son. Kinnunen is one of the returnees back this year for the Coyotes who open the season Friday, hosting Brantford. Coyotes' home opener Friday The Oakville Coyotes, spon sored by Corbett's, will start the Major Junior A roller hockey sea son at home this Friday night against their traditional home opener guests, the Brantford Thunderhawks. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Oakville Arena. This is always one of the best games of the year. The high scor ing games have been determined by one goal the past two seasons. The Thunderhawks bring in the scoring champion of the past three seasons, Jason Lesky. The Coyotes will counter with a fresh new looking lineup that has the Coyotes brass feeling very confident going into the 2000 campaign. We have all heard the old cliche: `This team looks great on paper.' With nine rookies in the lineup, the phrase fits for the Coyotes this season. However, the rookies are sur rounded by some very experi enced coaches in Ed Kirsten and Ron Piercey and some very talent ed fourth year veterans led by cap tain Jeff Elia and assistant captain Shane Labelle, both western all stars in `99. Flashy forward Jamie Barlow and steady defencemen Steve Kinnunen and Brandon Cordua are also returning for their fourth campaign. Along with them, sec ond year standouts Luke Domski and Ryan Fitzsimmons are back to build on a great rookie season. "The rookies are only rookies to this league," stated co-coach Ron Piercey. "All the players have no shortage of hockey experi ence." Ryan Miem is an AAA goalie out of the Guelph Jr. Storm pro gram that has dazzled the coaching staff during camp. Shawn Snider has just complet ed his second year in the OHL with Owen Sound. Matt Snider, Shawn's younger brother, played for the Orangeville Crushers Jr. B squad this past sea son and was drafted by the Sudbury Wolves and Dan Bognar also played for the Crushers this past season and was drafted by the North Bay Centennials in the OHL draft. Sean Leathong patrolled the Burlington Cougars blue line this past season and will be a welcome addition to the Coyotes defensive troops. Closer to home, the Coyotes are excited to have Stu MacCrimmon join the team after a great season with the Oakville Blades, where he was fourth in team scoring. This kid has great hands -- a natural for roller hockey. He will be fun to watch. Three players from the very successful 18 & under Coyote squad will see duty on the big club in the home opener, speedy for ward Stu Matheson and the defen sive pair of Mike Zack and Greg Carr. Oakville has been chosen by the league to host a weekend showcase tourney on the June 17/18 weekend, one of four the league has on its schedule. The showcase toumies feature cross-over games between the two divisions, and in the end, each team will face each other twice. "This is great for our communi ty," stated team President Jay Labelle. "To be able to see the cal ibre of players all in one place for one weekend will be awesome; you won't want to miss this." (W OF DORVAL) Sayer was still hurting (Continued from page D2) YMCA Run, Walk and Challenge Goes Saturday, May 6! The YMCA of Oakville is gearing up for a big turnout on Saturday. The event is on, rain or shine (but we're hoping for "shine" to make the day even more special). The 10k Run pre-registration is healthy, with many repeat entrants. Also encouraging is the number of new entrants, particularly those from out of town. It is going to be an exciting Run over a flat, fast course. The 5k Family Walk will leave the Y at the same time as the Run and will cover a cir cular route through central Oakville. The Walk is always popular, with children accompanying parents and grandparents - even the occasional canine joins the fun! For safety's sake, no roller blades or skateboards, please. All walkers will receive a certificate to mark their partici pation. The 1k Challenge is being presented for the second year. It leaves the Y at 10:20 am and follows a safe, circular route which does not involve crossing of any intersections. Well monitored by volun teers, police and Oakville R.E.A.C.T. per sonnel, the 1k Challenge is for under-12year-olds and Special Olympians, who bring so much enthusiasm to the event. All Challenge participants will receive medallions to commemorate the day. YMCA Child Care staff and volunteers will be set up to provide exciting activities for those children of Run or Walk participants who are too young to navigate the 10K, 5k or 1k courses. The awards ceremony takes place at 10:45 am. Interspersed with the awards will be draws for great prizes. And there are more prizes to be had - participants bringing in certain levels of pledges will win a variety of YMCA merchandise - a great souvenir of The Y's Millennium 2000 Run! See the event brochure for informa tion on pledge levels. Among the awards to be presented is the Ron Sanderson award for the first-place male runner in the 55-plus age category. The award was donated by the Sanderson family to commemorate Mr. Sanderson's role in starting the Y's 10k Run in 1981. Refreshments will be provided and lunch can be purchased for minimal cost after the awards ceremony. Generous dona tions from many food sponsors guarantee that, while you may leave the event tired from your physical activity, you certainly won't leave hungry or thirsty! On-site registration begins at 7:30 am on Saturday, May 6 at the YMCA at 410 Rebecca Street (between Dorval Drive and Fourth Line). YMCA volunteers will be on hand to greet you and direct you to the parking areas. Invidiata Team representa tives and Y volunteers will take care of registration. Queen Elizabeth Park High School bands and cheerleaders will pro vide entertainment and spur you on your 10k, 5k or 1k way. It promises to be an event with something for just about everyone - adult or child, male or female, alone or with family or friends, you are sure of a warm welcome, a well-run athletic contest, a fun-filled family event, plenty to eat and a chance to socialize. What more could you ask for on a Saturday morning in May! For more information or a registration form, call the YMCA at 845-3417 or drop by our Customer Service desk any time between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm, Monday to Friday this week. Proceeds from the event will be directed to the Y's Capital Campaign to help build our new facility. Come join us as The Invidiata Team presents The Millennium 10K Run, 5k Family Walk and 1k Challenge. You'll be glad you did! And we'll be delighted to see you! from Quebec, Alberta, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia), one preliminary bout had to be waged and Sayer drew the short straw for the extra fight on Friday night. It was to his further bad luck that the other short straw was drawn by an Alberta competitor who turned out to be a real qual ity opponent. "They just went toe to toe for three rounds and he jammed his neck," said the elder Sayer. Brandon thought the Albertan "was actually tougher than the guy from Quebec." Sayer won, but it took its toll when he had to face a fresh Quebec opponent on Saturday. "The guy from Quebec, when I fought him, I had a migraine from the guy that I fought on Friday night." Added his father Dave Sayer: "You could tell he wasn't as aggressive because he had this darn headache, he was still hurting." Little League kicks off It's play ball time on Oakville Little League diam onds all around town this Saturday. All o f the teams will swing into action at the following Oakville Parks -- River Oaks, O ur Lady o f Peace, Glen Abbey, Neyagawa, Heritage, Munns, Oakwood and Lindsay.
