Wednesday, May 10,2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Bascoe is Sheridan^ Male Athlete of the Year W hen the Sheridan Bruins lost to archrival Humber College in the provincial champi onships, and then remarkably were not given a wildcard berth to the Canadian cham pi onships, it marked the end of a remarkable col lege career for the Bruins Shane Bascoe. And the honours haven't quite stopped coming in. H e's earned quite a bit o f ink in the Beaver for a string o f honours that just keeps getting longer. For instance, he was the only active player of 12 named to the provincial Millennium, alltime m en's college basketball team. This year he was named the men's college basketball player of the year while making the all-Canadian team (for the third time) and the all-Academic team (for the second time). Not surprisingly, he was also the man of the hour at the recent Bruin's annual year-end ban quet, not just earning his third Sheridan athlete of the year award and basketball team MVP award but also · being presented with the Ontario C ollegiate A thletic Association (OCAA) inaugural male athlete o f the year award. He also received the provincial allAcademic Award. "Shane is a nice, honest, sincere young man," commented Sheridan's assistant athletic director Fred Wannamaker. "He handles the attention he receives very well and genuinely has a love for the game of basketball. `T h e college was proud to recently unveil the Shane Bascoe Award for Academic Excellence. "I congratulate Shane on his terrific acade mic-athletic career here at Sheridan College and wish him all the best with his future endeavours." Other accomplishments, just to name a few, are four OCAA all-star selections and two-time all-star game MVP. Included here are all the Bruins varsity sports award winners for this year. NOREEN ORTILLA was a double award winner, winning both the women's athlete of the year and the women's volleyball MVP.
