www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, August 12, 2016 | 14 Barclay goes above and beyond continued from p.13 Deputy Police Chief Carol Crowe said Barclay dedicated more than 120 hours to victims and another 55 hours to additional victim services training in 2015 alone. "Described by officers as `invaluable' and by victims as `an angel,' Michelle Barclay is making a difference in her community with her selfless acts of kindness and compassion," said Crowe. "Families torn apart by crime and tragedy , such as traffic fatalities, sudden death, suicide, homicide, domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual assault, are just some of the calls Michelle has responded to in her 13 years with the victim services unit. Crime and tragedy can often leave individuals alone, confused, scared, disconnected and feeling hopeless about the future. The kindness of a stranger, such as Michelle, has more often than not helped restore a person's faith in their community by reminding them they are not alone." The Halton police Victim Services Unit is comprised of highly-trained staff and volunteers, who provide immediate telephone and on-scene intervention, emotional support, community referrals and limited financial assistance to victims of crime and tragedy throughout Halton region. A press release from the Ministry of the Attorney General noted when other people are home with family and friends during the holidays, Barclay is signing up for extra volunteer shifts. The statement called her an inspiration to her fellow volunteers noting she provides guidance and support and assists with training and victim services events. "It is common to find volunteers, less common to find volunteers willing to dedicate five years of service, and extremely rare to find volunteers willing to dedicate 10 years of service," said Crowe. "Michelle Barclay has been giving back to her community for 13 years and has no plans to stop anytime soon, at least we hope not." Barclay, who works as an office manager at a funeral home in Milton, said her uncle was a police officer in Halton and credits him with introducing her to the Victim Services Unit. At the time, Barclay said, she was looking for a way to help people in the community and found her uncle's suggestion to be a good fit. She said she appreciates being recognized by the attorney general. "It was an incredible honour to receive such an award, but more importantly I just love what I do with Halton police. I love to help people," said Barclay. "That is the most important part for me." The Attorney General's Victim Services Award of Distinction is an annual award, which pays tribute to the exceptional achievements of professionals and volunteers in the field of victim services. The awards also encourage the sharing of best practices and unique achievements among victim services professionals and volunteers across the province For more information about the Victim Services Unit, visit www.haltonpolice.ca.
