Firefighters arrived at the building at around 1:30 p.m., after receiving reports of a nauseous odour coming from the building's basement/pool maintenance room. Deputy Fire Chief George Birtig said a five-gallon container of a Varsal-based product (possibly a finish or diluting product) corroded and leaked in the building's utility room creating a strong odour. Fire crews blocked access to the basement area and parking garage and told residents to remain in their apartments. Birtig said no evacuation was necessary. Birtig said one person was exposed to fumes from the spill and taken to hospital after stating they felt "queasy." He said there is no reason to believe the exposure could result in serious health problems.
