Hammerschmidt, an Oakville resi dent who works at Metroland's Corporate IT in Mississauga, was diagnosed and admitted into Princess Margaret Hospital last Aug. 15. "He has been sick for a couple of months," said his wife Jacqueline Potoczek. "When he was in Germany with his dad, somebody gave him a massage and noticed that his lymph nodes had swollen," she said. "Blood tests initially found it was mono or a virus and he was told he'll get over it in about a month. "But, Jason kept going back to the doctor because he wasn't feel ing good and then he was finally told it was leukemia," said his wife who is on leave, for a second time, from her part time job. "Now we've been told a week ago that he needs a bone marrow transplant. "The good thing about a bone marrow transplant is that the goal afterwards is a cure after one month instead of two more years of chemo," Potoczek said. His only sibling, a sister, the first to be tested, was not a match, said Potoczek. His parents are currently being tested, "but it's unlikely they'll be a match," she lamented. The couple has no children; hence Hammerschmidt is look ing outside of his family to find a donor, and has turned to the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry run by Canadian Blood Services for a life-saving bone marrow donation. "My leukemia treatment options have recently changed," said Hammerschmidt in an email message to his fellow Metroland employees, a plea for help he and Potoczek have decid ed to make public.
