Local high school students looking to earn their required community services hours can call 905-845-8014 in the evenings, after 7:30 p.m., or on the weekend. Fare Share serves an average of 350 families (between 1,200-1,300 people) per month. Bromberg said while the need has stayed steady annually, it's the people who change. "It (the need) has maintained itself, but with different families," she noted. "Some fall away and new ones come, and some have been here for a long time, about 20 years. The people change, but the numbers are basically the same." Fare Share also helps drop-ins who always receive an emergency order of supplies, according to Bromberg; the food bank averages between 15-20 cases per month. If an individual or family returns for help, and they live in Oakville, they are asked to register as clients; if they are from out of town, Fare Share suggests a food bank in their area they can visit. All clients are initially interviewed to ensure they qualify and then regularly to determine if their circumstances have changed. Bromberg said Fare Share had hoped the new fortunate in our community...." The CCB is a monthly tax-free payment for families with children under the age of 18. It replaced the Canada Child Tax Benefit, National Child Benefit Supplement and the Universal Child Care Benefit. Bromberg said she also anticipates some local Syrian refugee families may begin to come in for help as their year-sponsorship support comes close to expiring. "We hope to have a supply of food going into 2017, so that when families and individuals approach us, we can help them out," she added. Monetary donations are also accepted, as they are vital to the food bank's existence, according to Fare Share. Donations are used to buy perishable food items, such as chicken, ground beef, ham, fish, cheese and fresh and frozen vegetables and fruit. As well, a large portion of the money pays for vouchers provided to families with children to use at local supermarkets for items, such as milk and eggs. "We're very grateful for the community support over the years," said Bromberg. "We're not paying a salary and never have. I think that's important for people to know. If they support us with groceries that's fabulous, and if they support us with funds, of course, a tax receipt is always issued right on the spot."
