Schools urged to join in Halton's Great Big Crunch There have been 900,000 crunchers since 2006 and last year alone, more than 180,000 crunchers from coast to coast. Are you a cruncher? Anyone can be one, but students are the target of Halton's Great Big Crunch, and until tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 30), schools of both the Halton District Catholic School Board and the Halton District School Board can register to participate in the Oct. 13 event. Halton Food for Thought (HFFT) and Healthy Kids Community Challenge have joined the initiative begun by FoodShare in 2006, and will provide all the apples and educational resources to participating schools free of charge. Final tally The total of Halton crunchers will be added into FoodShare's Great Big Crunch final tally. "Healthy Kids Community Challenge and Halton Food for Thought have partnered up to spread the word about the importance of healthy eating and healthy snacking to school age children," said Nancy Rumple, HFFT's director of communications and development. The two organizations are also hoping to highlight the availability of local foods. FoodShare's event was launched to encourage Canadians to celebrate healthy snacking and to improve food literacy through the provision of educational resources, she said.
