14 - The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday M arch 1, 2006 U of T team takes top honours After a one-year drought, a team of engineering students from the University of Toronto reclaimed its Formula Student Championship recently at Bruntingthorpe Proving Grounds near Leicester, England. In all, 85 university teams from 17 countries entered the contest in which the aim was to design, build and com pete in a single-seater racing car they made from scratch. Organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE), the three-day contest, now in its eighth year, is the biggest student engineering motorsport event in Europe and a mecca for more than 1,000 of the world's best mechanical engineering students, to show off and compete in machines they have created themselves. Ross Brawn, technical director of the Ferrari FI team, officially opened the event and was not only "impressed with the standards of engineering on display, but also the teamwork and project man agement skills." Victory in the sprint and endurance events and a third place in the skid pad test helped the U of T crew edge out the Helsinki Polytechnic team from Finland and the third place Swedish Royal Institute of Technology team. As overall Class 1 winners, the team from Toronto picked up a £1,000 prize plus a free entry into next year's Formula Student competition. They also took home an additional $1,000 as winners of the SAE Dynamics award. Teams from Calgary, Montreal, Ryerson and Waterloo also competed, with class awards going to Ecole Polytechnique du Montreal for presen tation and the Ecole de Technologie Superieure Montreal team for Class 1 design. the driver's 3 year subscript Carguide.
