Students inspired to action by Terry Fox's determination continued from p.20 Griffin, who brainstormed the idea for the walk after seeing how inspired his students were, said his class teamed up with Grades 5/6 teacher Gianni Mastrella's class to research local charities they could support. They made signs with inspirational quotes to carry on their journey across Oakville. Wearing homemade shirts in support of their Terry Fox walk, Victoria Raposo and Sarah Sonnbichler said it meant a lot to them to embody Fox's spirit as they began the walk. "We were really inspired by that video, so we wanted to show that what he did really mattered," said Raposo, 11. The Grade 6 students told the Oakville Beaver how much they admire Fox's confidence and dedication. "He always ran no matter what time of the day, even at 4 a.m.," said Raposo. "He was just so amazing and inspiring. I'm really proud to be a Canadian like him." Jumpstart, she continued, is a great charity to support because it helps everyone have access to sports. "We all thought kids should have a right to be able to play sports," Sonnbichler said, while Raposo added everyone should be able to have fun. Both girls said while they'd done five-kilometre-walk events, and 15 kilometres seemed a bit daunting, they were up to the challenge. So, too, was Reece Gyasi, who said he most admired Fox's persistence and courage. The Grade 5 student carried a sign, which read, "Believe you can and you're halfway there." Grade 4 student Jasmine Ladzinski told the Beaver she's likes the idea of helping other kids get active in sports the way Fox helped raise funds to support cancer research. She said she admired his perseverance in walking across Canada to raise money to fight cancer. "He didn't sit in the hospital scared," Ladzinski added, noting she was looking forward to reaching the other side of Oakville later in the day. Meanwhile, her mother Marta Skwira, a volunteer supervisor, said she was proud of the students. "It's a great cause," she said, sharing how it's a great way to engage students to help others. 21 | Friday, October 21, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com OTHS holds fundraising garage sale Oakville Trafalgar (OT) High School is hosting a Garage Sale and Bottle Drive Saturday, Oct. 29.
