www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 13, 2016 | 44 Halton Green Screens documentary lineup continues this fall For Halton Green Screens (HGS) organizers, the first step to creating change is bringing awareness. That's why the Oakville-based non-profit organization brings environmental film screenings to the regional community every month. "HGS is committed to bringing the newest, most gripping environmental documentaries to communities in Halton," said organizers. "HGS hosts monthly screenings in Oakville in partnership with Film.Ca and is pleased to announce the lineup for this fall series." This month's screening, aligning with Waste Reduction Week (Oct. 17-23), is Greenvaders and takes place tonight (Thursday). The documentary shows the battle of Ottawa citizens who have fought against the expansion of landfills. Special guest will be Oakville's Heather Govender, who took the #HaltonWasteChallenge to new heights by living as close to waste-free for an entire year -- all the while, being pregnant. Govender wraps up her challenge at the screening and will be doing a public weighin of the garbage and waste she's accumulated over the past year. "We encourage all of our attendees to be mindful of their consumption," said Chantelle Misheal, HGS interim program coers in their sector. You can look forward to having owner Dave De Sylva speak after this film about sustainable development." All films will be shown at Film.ca Cinemas, 171 Speers Rd., unit 25. Film screenings start at 7 p.m., followed by a discussion or activity, which wraps up by 9 p.m. HGS showings are held on the second Thursday of the month from September to November and January to June. "We need to acknowledge that recycling is not the solution, and that we can all take steps to reduce the need for plastics and non-recyclables." Fall documentary series wraps up Nov. 10 Wrapping up the fall series on Thursday, Nov. 10, HGS will screen Seeds of Time. The film follows agriculture pioneer Cary Fowler as he races against time to protect the biodiversity of crops, and emphasize the importance of how the food system needs to change so that it can adapt to global changes. "The effects of climate change are causing starvation and riots around the world. Crop failures are leading many to fear what will happen to our future food supply," stated a media release. "HGS is thrilled to announce Del Ridge Homes Inc. as a sponsor this year, as they have truly made their mark as green lead- Children invited to join new St. Jude's Anglican Church choir program St. Jude's Anglican Church has started a new children's choir program. "Continuing in the strong tradition of choral music at St. Jude's, this fall, we are introducing a new musical opportunity to the community," stated organizers. The junior choir is meant for participants aged seven to 13 years and headed by St. Jude's music director Simon Walker. "Simon was born in the north of England and was educated as a boy chorister at Durham Cathedral," stated a media release. After immigrating to Canada in 2010, he became assistant organist in the historic St. Mary Magdalene church in Toronto before coming to St. Jude's in 2012. "Simon has made Anglican music his life-time vocation and brings much experience to starting this new children's choir opportunity at St. Jude's," stated the release. The new children's choir sings during St. Jude's 9:30 a.m. Sunday service and there are no fees or auditions. Choristers meet Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m. and coffee will be served for parents during the rehearsal.
