Novice Rangers best in Halton Hills tourney The Oakville Rangers novice AA rep hockey team went one step further in their second tournament action of the season. After being runners-up at a September Early Bird tournament, the Rangers won the Best of the Best tournament in Halton Hills last weekend. Oakville edged Belle River 3-2 in the championship game after almost failing to qualify for the tournament semifinals. Oakville had to win its last two preliminary games to extend its tournament participation. The Rangers took a 2-1-1 record into a sudden-death semifinal against undefeated Faustina, with the Rangers hanging on to edge Faustina 2-1. In the championship game, Oakville came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Belle River 3-2 with a late third-period goal by Zackary Medeiros during a scramble in front of the Belle River net. All six of the Rangers' tournament games were either ties or one-goal games. Both goalies contributed mightily to AA squad narrowly qualifies for semifinals before rallying for gold against Belle River NWHL's Harrison Browne announces he's transgender One of the first members of the National Women's Hockey League, Harrison Browne of Oakville, is now possibly the first professional athlete to publicly state he is transgender. The Buffalo Beauts forward announced today that he would like to be identified at Harrison, not Hailey, the name he was born with. Browne told Michele Steele of ESPNW that he'll continue to play women's hockey and won't medically transition until after his playing career is over. He'll also refrain from using testosterone supplements as it's against the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. The 23-year-old Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association grad played university hockey at Maine and Mercyhurst and represented Canada at the IIHF U18 Women's World Championship five years ago in Sweden. Browne signed with the Beauts in the NWHL's inaugural season last year and the team opened the new NWHL season last Friday. "I identify as a man," Browne told Steele. "My family is starting to come to grips with it; now it's my time to be known as who I am, to be authentic and to hear my name said right when I get a point, or see my name on a website." 47 | Thursday, October 13, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Members of the Oakville novice AA Rangers team include (front row from left) goalies Hudson Caldwell and Braedon Clarke; (second row) Carter Shane, Ian Sleeth, Isaac Hatch, Nicholas Stock, Matthew Wood and Zackary Medeiros; (third row) Benjamin Gelinas, Dilan Kauzlaric, Isaac Shaw, Teddy Low, Ethan Belchetz, Braeden Nesbitt, Alexander Carr, Juliano Goncalves and Jake Williams; (back row) coaches Eldon Low, Ryan Wood, (head coach) Matt Nesbitt, Derek Stock and Lance Belchetz. |photo submitted the championship win, with Braedon Clarke winning the semifinal and Hudson Caldwell taking the victory in the final.
