The Halton Catholic District School Board's Mock Trial Competition will be held Thursday, March 23 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School - and the pub lic is invited. The competition begins at 8:30 a.m. with opening remarks from Halton Catholic District School Board Superintendent of Education, Curriculum Services, Rick MacDonald. Teams representing the board's secondary schools will participate in the competition, where students develop a valuable awareness of the law and its importance in Canadian society. Visitors may attend as court room spectators. Judging this year' s competi tion will be two Halton Crown Attorneys, Charon Kerr and Amy Stevenson, plus Wendy Oughtred, a practicing attorney in Halton. "This annual competition presents an opportunity for par ticipating students to gain an appreciation of the legal process, while learning to exercise skills of critical analysis, decision-making, and advocacy," said MacDonald. All teams will be given the same criminal case to try. One team plays the role of the Crown Attorney and presents the evi dence, while the second team defends the accused. Points are awarded based on the presenta tion of evidence and the individ ual judges will determine the win ner of each trial. This year' s case involves charges of assault with a weapon. The top four teams at the com petition will advance to the annu al Halton Regional Mock Trial Tournament, sponsored by the Halton Legal Education Committee and the Ontario Justice Education Network. This will be held on May 3 in Milton, where teams from sec ondary schools across Halton will compete against one another. The two finalists of the board's competition will go on to partici pate in the Catholic GTA Tournament in May at the University Avenue courthouse in Toronto.
