The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 17, 2006 - 25 Art materials at Oakville Galleries From Jan. 27 - March 25, The Oakville Beaver will publish a series of con tributed articles for Oakville Addresses, a new public program at Oakville Galleries, We asked a variety of Jocal Oakvillians, both teens and adults, to write a short essay on their favourite artwork from Oakville Galleries' permanent collection. Today's article by Kay Woods takes a slightly different approach as she has cho sen to write on several art works from the Galleries, Woods is a long time Oakville resident and former writer and curator, Oakville Addresses is a complementary program to the exhibition Addressing Oakville, on at Centennial Square, 120 Navy St until March 26. ON SALE SATURDAY, MARCH 18 TO FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 2006 By Kay Woods SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER I have always been attracted to the works of artists who use materials other than paper or canvas to make an art object. There are many examples of such constructions in the collec tion of Oakville Galleries. One of the more spectac ular pieces in this vein is of a stretched sheet of pig intestine used as a base for Stephen Andrew's Untitled (1996) work gives an airy almost spiritual quality to the softly coloured cloud like image printed upon it that few other substances could convey. Alan Belcher has made an amusing small Untitled (1995) sculpture using a white silk purse which he has embroidered and filled with Canadian pennies. He has then sewn a dried sow's ear covered in netting on the other side, bringing to mind the old adage "you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear." Some of these works are viewed as "sculpture-in-theround," others are viewed frontally. This art of joining unlikely objects together in a single context often car ries a hidden message but also lends itself to eccentric experiment. The vitality and originality of these objects add to the pleasure of a visit to the Galleries. bulk barn* ·pitted large Ashlock Prunes 3?. selected varieties » .77/100g Bits& Bites . .57/100g 0 // I Country Estate Earth Shelves (1992) by Kim Adams. In this work, Adams cre ates a work of art that repre sents a panoramic view of an entire acreage with its land forms filled with miniature molded plastic models of people, vehicles, and indus trial equipment for the building of an estate in progress, complete with a Country Estate Earth Shelves, 1992, by Kim Adams private golf course, all set on a toy red wagon.
