Hockley Valley Resort took home 13 awards from the Salon Culinaire 2000- Canada's largest and most renowned culinary competitionheld May 5-7, 2000 in Toronto. The awards were distributed to six members of the Hockley Valley Resort culinary team. Led by Executive Chef Gamini Hemalal, the seven-members team participated with 18 entries in 11 dif ferent categories, including the presti gious Gold Box Live Cookery Competition which won Hemalal a very prestigious first place standing. The small, but impressive Resort com peted with a viriant selection of Canada's finest hotels and resorts. In fact, the Hockley Valley Team beat out chefs from the King Edward, Westin Harbour Castle, Hilton Hotels, Four Points, Sherton, The Spa at the Elmwood and Culinary Team Canada members. In total, the team won 6 bronze, 3 silver and 3 gold medals making them the highest gold medal winning team and highest overall medal winning team. In addition, Hemalal earned the distinction as the most awarded individual chef of the competition, winning an impressive 6 awards for his Sugar Showpiece, Chocolates Showpiece, Ice Carving, Fruit & Vegtable Carving and 6 Individual Appetizer entries. "We approached the competition as an opportuntity to white wash our competitiors," said Hemalal. "And that is exactly what we did." Chef Hamalal's expertise and experi ence most certainly helped the team stay focused throughout the event. Also a Georgian College culinary instructor, Hemalal is one of the most awarded chefs in Canada, with well over 40 awards to his credit, including the distinction as one of the Best Chefs in the Middle East form the Master Chefs of Belgium. Hemalal joined the Hockey Valley Resorts Team in August of 1999. The team also recently participated in a culinary event for charity and helped launch Hockley Valley Resort's successful Perfect Match food and wine weekends this past spring. Chef Hemalal and his Team are also planning to continue daz zling audiences outside the Resort, with a demonstration of culinary creativity at the LCBO's Bayview Village location on Saturday, May 13, 2000 from 1 a.m. until 1 p.m. Purchased in 1985 by Mr. and Mrs. Adamo, Hockley Valley Resort is 300 acres of golf, ski and meeting facilities. It boasts 104 guestrooms and 16 banquet/confrence rooms, accommodat ing up to 550 people.
