According to Peel Regional Police, the 51-year old victim had boiling water poured over her as she slept and was smothered with a pillow. Constable Wendy Sims explained that the attempted murder took place around 4:30 a.m. at a residence on Williamsport Drive. The woman was asleep on the couch when someone poured a pot of boiling water on her and then tried to suffocate her with a pillow. During the subsequent struggle, a second pot of boiling water was poured on the victim before her son entered the room and restrained her assailant. The victim was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with second and third degree bums to her face, neck and shoulder. Huan Nguyen, of Falgarwood Drive, in O akville has been charged with attempted murder. Police honour local heroes K a re n R o b b in s « , SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Four Oakville residents and four Oakville police officers were among the 52 civilians and police officers honoured for their bravery and commitment to the community by the Halton Regional Police, last Wednesday. Three Oakville youths, Kevin Smith, Miro Maijorahn and Jeff Garand were commended for their willingness to become involved in an unknown and potentially life-threatening situ ation on April 22, 1999. While the trio was driving home from school, they came across a person lying on the ground in a driveway. The cyclist had been struck by a vehicle, that fled the scene. The students contacted emergency service personnel and waited with the victim until help arrived, possibly saving the victim's life since blood had already started to coagulate in his throat. John Hartford, also from Oakville, was given an award for preventing a tragedy on July 30, 1999. While driving north on sixth line, Hartford saw a slow moving vehicle ahead of him, which was swerving into oncoming traffic. He followed the vehicle after observing that the female driver was incoherent while stopped at a traffic light. He was eventually able to remove the keys from the ignition, He contacted police who attended and arrested the driver for being impaired. The Halton Regional Police Service's Service Delivery Team was commerided for its leading edge community policing philoso phy. The team, which was formed in 1995 to deal with the transition to a problem-oriented geographic based team policing environment, received an honourable mention by the International Chiefs of Police Weber Seavey Award in 1999. Constable Stephanie Jamieson was recog nized for her perseverance throughout the pursuit of a person wanted for operating a stolen vehicle.
