Tornado sailing title for Johansson, Stittle Form er Oakville Yacht Squadron m em ber Oskar Johansson and teammate Kevin Stittle won the Tornado North American Sailing Championship earlier this m onth in Biscayne Bay, Florida. SPOKTSBRIEFS The event attracted 21 of the world's top Tornado sailors from nine countries and featured 10 races. Each team's top nine results were recorded. Johansson and Stittle consistently placed in the top five of each regatta, a conservative but winning combination. "We beat the current Olympic silver medalist," said Johansson, who represented Canada at the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens. "This is a huge confidence builder for us." Johansson and Stittle, an Orangeville resident, continue to train in Miami full-time and hope to compete in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Competing in the girls' 15-and-over division, Fox earned gold in 200-metre freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke (the latter in a personal-best time of 1:17.63). The silver came in the 200m medley relay, with help from Jen Wilson, Kirsten Veenhuizen and Kayla Payne. Wilson also enjoyed a fine meet, winning the girls' 15-andover 50m freestyle and 100m intermediate medley events as well as claiming silver in 100m freestyle. Other local swimmers to win two individual races includ ed OT's Jeff MacSween (boys' 14-and-under 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke) and Loyola's Marina McDougall (girls' 14and-under 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly), Curtis Samuel (boys' 14-and-under 100m intermediate medley and 100m freestyle) and Cam McEllen (boys' 15-and-over 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke). OT also won silver in the boys' 14-and-under 200m freestyle relay and bronze medals in the girls' 15-and-over, boys' 15-and-over and boys' 14-and-under 200m medley relays. Loyola earned silver in-the boys' 15-and-over 200m freestyle relay. B urlington's blotre Dame and Central, along with Georgetown, also competed in the meet. GHAC will deter mine qualifiers for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships, which will be held March 7-8 in Etobicoke. Bantam Vytis earns bronze in Mississauga Christynna Cyrus scored the game-winning basket late in regulation as the Oakville Vytis bantam girls' basketball team won bronze at a recent AAA tournam ent in Mississauga. Cyrus' bucket came with less than 10 seconds left in regu lation and broke a 35-35 tie against the host Mississauga team*. Oakville opened the tournam ent with a 38-21 loss to Blessed Sacrament, then rebounded to down the Brampton Blue Devils 41-28 and Etobicoke Storm 42-30. In the semifi nal, the Vytis fell 41-27 to the top-seeded Brantford CYO, but rallied for the tight win in the bronze-medal game. Also contributing to the third-place showing were Ruta Rekus, Nicole Garcia, Zoe Fairbairn, Jamie Kirkconnell, Emily Turner, Alex Bekkers, Larisa Saplys, Meredith Joaquim I and Lea Kirkconnell.
