The award recognizes contributions instrumental in the excellence and success of a training program at a Public Safety Communications Agency. "The nominees in the category understand the importance of mentoring employees through leadership and display an ongoing commitment to their employees' success," stated APCO. The Hamilton resident has worked in 9-1-1 communications for more than 20 years, 14 of them with Halton police. "He is known for taking important topics and experiences to create real learning opportunities that are both fun and informative. Van Dyk is passionate about teaching other communicators of the important role they play in each and every call they take. He believes every communicator should understand what an honour and privilege it is to work every day taking calls that could save a person' s life," stated a Halton police press release. Van Dyk has been Halton police communications training co-ordinator for nine years, doing training for 65 communicators -- full-time, contract and supervisory staff. He was a recipient of the Queen' s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013. Van Dyk received the (Halton) Chief' s Commendation for Extraordinary Effort in May 2005. He has the Registered Public Safety Leader (RPL) designation from APCO International. APCO Canada, Inc. is a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to the enhancement of public safety communications. Its 500plus members include 9-1-1, police, fire and emergency medical services as well as emergency management, disaster planning, and federal search and rescue personnel.
