Ranging in length from 3.6 kilo metres to 2 4 .8 km, each loop is ac companied by a detailed map, direc tions, colour photos and local lore. The book comes after Ross' Cale don Hikes: Loops & Lattes guide, modelled for trails in Caledon. Ross spent 13 months researching and writing Halton Hikes. "The popularity of my Loops & Latte guides demonstrates the inter est in walking and hiking for rec reation and health," Ross told the Oakville Beaver. "Daily walking, according to ex perts, is about the best way to im prove your health, reduce anxiety and have fun. My beautiful, full-co lour guides make it easier for people to hit the trails." The trails cover Oakville, Burl ington, the cliffs of the Niagara Es carpment near Campbellville, Mil ton, Acton, Georgetown and Glen Williams -- bordering Eden Mills, Rockwood, Erin, Cheltenham and Terra Cotta. George Hosek was awarded an Emmy for Best Photography by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Chicago/Midwest Chapter, at an awards ceremony held earlier in December. "I'm thrilled to have won the Emmy for Best Photography for my work on Liberating a Conti nent" Hosek told the Oakville Beaver. "Hailing from Prague, in the former Czecho slovakia, I lived through communism. It was interesting for me to have the opportunity to meet church dignitaries and political leaders that were involved in opposing communism -- and helping to bring about its ultimate fall," he continued. "The film shines a light on the reality of com munism and the triumph of spiritual power over oppression. I'm pleased to have it recog nized, as it' s important for younger generations to be aware, so as to not repeat the past." Hosek is a graduate of the Academy of Film and Television Arts (FAM U) in Prague in the former Czechoslovakia, and has a Masters de gree in Fine Arts. Before coming to North America, he worked in the Czech film industry at the Film Studio Barrandov in Prague. Thirty-plus years in film industry His 30-plus years of experience in the film industry spans Europe, the U.S. and Canada, and includes feature films, commercials, docu mentaries and TV series, such as the teen drama Radio Free Roscoe . Liberating a Continent is narrated by actor Jim Caviezel and features original music by com poser Joe Kraemer of Mission Impossible fame. The documentary illustrates how the late pope St. John Paul II was a driving force in lib erating central and eastern Europe from com munist rule. The 90-minute film, which made its U.S. na tional debut December 2015, features archival footage and a wide array of interview subjects, including Richard Allen, Ronald Reagan' s na tional security adviser; former Polish president and Solidarity founder Lech Walesa; papal bi ographer George Weigel; and John Paul II' s lifelong assistant, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, archbishop of Krakow, to name a few. "The film chronicles Karol Wojtyla' s (John Paul II' s birth name) remarkable rise from an underground seminarian and amateur play wright to cardinal archbishop of Krakow. Fur ther, it brings to light how Wojtyla' s ascension to the papacy in 1978 struck fear in the heart of the Soviet Politburo," stated a media release. "As archbishop, Wojtyla developed tools for resistance to communist rule that were ground ed in defense of human rights and the reclaim ing of Poland' s Catholic identity. Historians and journalists, with access to recently declassified KGB documents, help to illustrate the vast So viet campaign to counteract John Paul II' s moral crusade," it continued. "The documentary follows the wave of free thought that swept through the Soviet bloc as a result of the pope' s epic nine-day pilgrimage to Poland in June 1979." The film is written and directed by David Naglieri and co-directed and edited by Marc Boudignon.
