33 |Thursday, January 5, 2017 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Teen has pondered space issues since he was a boy continued from p.32 at the Johnson Space Center, including tours, briefings with NASA mentors and an engineer ing team project to support Mars mission re search. From Adam' s resume, it is not surprising he was chosen for the program. He was a junior counsellor at Camp Blessing, a Christian camp for children with physical, learning and emotional issues. Along with two senior counsellors, he cared for one camper, ensuring he had his health needs met and was able to participate in fun ac tivities. He was also inducted into the National Honor Society and is vice-president of his school' s premed club. He will spend three weeks on a medical mis sion in Puerto Rico next summer assisting doc tors and nurses. "I really like meeting and working with dif ferent people, especially people from other cul tures or with different abilities," said Adam. "My parents taught me to always be open to new experiences and learn something from ev eryone I meet. They also taught me to do my personal best and learn from every experience, good or bad." Adam, who has a little sister Miranda, also en joys playing board games with his family, hang ing out with friends and golfing with his dad and grandfather. He has also been in a choir every year since he was five, including the Oakville Children's Choir and Boys' Choir. He is now in his school' s Elite Vocal Ensem ble. "Since he was little, he has wondered about things like how astronauts use the bathroom or sweat in space suits," said Adam' s dad, Dr. Jose Sanchez. "Now he' s fascinated by how metabo lism, bone density and muscle tone are affected. He' s always been curious, determined and hard working, so his mother and I have no doubt he will one day be one of NASA' s problems solvers on these issues."
