This Bon Voyage Concert is a prelude to the Tuscany International Children's Festival where they will fea ture the same music. Oakville choir to represent Canada at International Children' s Choir Festival By Kathy Yanchus SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER It will be a memorable summer for members of the Oakville Children's Choir. With a trip to the Tuscany International Children's Cho rus Festival scheduled for early July, excitement has only been overshadowed by massive preparation. It will be the farthest that choristers have traveled since the choir was founded in 1994. Prior to the trip abroad, the chamber choir, a select group of singers from the senior choir, had visited Halifax, but this upcoming trip involves all 38 senior choristers, seven chap erones, musical accompanist Janet Stchow and musical director, Glenda Crawford. One o f the major reasons for the trip is the man who will be guest conductor, Dr. Henry Leek: "an expert in kids' choirs who is in big demand." Once the application, with audition tape, from the Oakville Children's Choir was accepted, plans got under I i way for the ensem ble's nine-day stay in the town of Montecatini, near Florence, where they will participate in a com i bination of mass rehearsals, showcase concerts, workshops and sightseeing. Ten choirs from the U.S. and Europe will participate in the non-competitive event, with the Oakville choir being the sole Canadian representative. Because it's a new experience for everyone and due to sheer numbers of travelers, the preparations are "huge." The first order of business was to develop a repertoire, which has been underway since last fall. Beyond the music preparation, there has been the estab lishment o f the Tuscany fund-raising committee, with all money raised going towards defraying the $3,500 cost for each child. Among the events organized were several Eat Your Way to Italy dinners. "There are issues like clothing. We want all the kids dressed in the same T-shirts, a different color for every day." As well as being a wonderfully memorable trip for the children, choir organizers also want it to be an educational one, so each chorister has been given a binder on Italy with information on history, culture and landmarks. The repertoire demonstrates the range and talent of the choir and is a mixture of classical and Canadian pieces, including the modem day Frobisher Bay and the M k'Maq H onour Song. The country will be well represented with the choir's choice of music, says Crawford. The choir has stuck to its weekly rehearsal schedule - an intense two hours every Monday spent learning to read music and appreciate different styles, composers and lan guages, which prepares the choir for performances through out the year. "The kids really like to sing," and will keep rehearsing and performing until the day they depart. Crawford hopes the trip will provide her choir members with a lifelong memory. "It will make them realize there's a whole world out there." The chance to work with a great conductor is also very special for the members, she adds. "For me, I hope it's a success for the choir. Touring is so important. It's important to have something concrete, a goal to work towards. The whole organization has pulled togeth er. We all know this will be a great artistic experience for the children." The Oakville Children's Choir has one concert remaining before their trip, a Bon Voyage Concert, featuring their fes tival music at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 30th in St. Simon's Anglican Church, 1450 Litchfield Rd. Tickets are $5 and are available by calling the choir office at 337-7104.
