Black Nights turn tourney into Alzheimer's fundraiser Alumni of the Oakville Black Knights football squad are banding together again. But like most retired veterans of contact sports, it's golf they'll be playing. And in the spirit of good sportsmanship, they've turned it into a charity golf tournament with the money raised ear marked for the Alzheimer Society of Halton Wentworth. The tournament will be held Thursday, Sept. 14th at the Flamborough Hills G olf Club. The Black Knights actually passed on $200 to the Alzheimer's Society from their tournament last year, a spontaneous reaction to the news that one of their former members, Dick Brown, had died of Alzheimer's. Brown, who had suited up for the Ti-Cats, coached the Knights in 1960. He had been hospitalized with Alzheim er's. This year, the team decided to formally tum its annual golf tournament into a fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society, and they have set an inaugural goal of $2,000. Previously an invitational tourney, it has been expanded to 60 players on a first-come, first-play basis, with hopes that it can be more than doubled to 144 players next year. The alumni's golf committee "is more than pleased at the reception we've been given by the region's sponsors and merchants," remarked Bob McKay, one of the team's founders and first coach. To date, 13 of 18 hole sponsorships have been provided by: Investm ent Planning Council; RBC Dominion Securities; B udds' Saturn Saab Isuzu; Halton-Caird Insurance Brokers; 1-2-1 Personal Trainers; CAW; John Holland Motors; Avaya Communications; M arilu's Market; David Coons Insurance; Hamilton Sertoma Club; B urlington Autom otive Centre; and Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home. Prizes have been given by the Town of Oakville, Shoppers Drug Mart, Tiger Cats, Garvey's and Art Lee. Non-golfing Black Knight alumni have provided prize money as has Rick New, son of Kelly New, an original executive member o f the Black Knights. For more info, call Jake Fennell at 827-3676. And what better place to start off then soccer, said new athletic director Jim Flack (who is also the longtime coach of the very successful men's basketball team). With Oakville being such a powerhouse in soccer, and boasting the biggest club in Canada, he said it was a natur al place to start. So, augmenting the varsity sports that were kept alive at the college (namely, men and women's volleyball and m en's basketball) will be varsity indoor soccer for both men and women. And the the following year, outdoor soccer will be added. Coaches are being sought and should contact Flack at the college. In their previous encounter, Oakville had won 3-2. Oakville's offence jumped out of the gate with four runs on five hits in the first inning, including doubles by Scott DeGroot and Ryan Mallough and singles by Matt Downer, Adam Davidson and Ryan Malhotra. Davidson had two RBI's. With an RBI each were Malhotra and Mallough. Oakville pitcher Alden Black put High Park down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the first inning and then kicked off the sec ond inning with a triple. This started the ball rolling on three more runs for a 7-0 lead. Included in the mini onslaught were two singles by DeGroot and Mallough, a double by Sergio Lujan and a sac fly by Marko Donordic. High Park finally found their hitting form, coming back with two in the fourth and three in the fifth after two Oakville errors. But pitcher Black, not to be outdone, quickly got two infield outs in the sixth, a walk and then his eighth strike-out. 1997 Intrepid Sport Platinum, very well equipped and very low km. only $ 15,995 (2 to choose) 1999 Dodge Caravan SE Blue, power group, demo with under 15,000 km.
