Inpatients from May, June or July of 2000 have a good chance of being asked for an opinion about their hospital stays. "Knowing our patients per ceptions of the quality of service and care they received can real ly help us," said HHS President and chief executive officer John Oliver. `T he results will provide us with a better understanding of what we are doing well and where we are not meeting patients expectations. This information will help guide our future directions and improve ments." The patient satisfaction pro gram is part of HHS' quality improvement program. HHS is working along with Parkside Associates Inc., a com pany that specializes in cus tom er service tracking for healthcare organizations. HHS will be provided with comprehensive reports from each hospital program. Over time this will indicate trends occurring in specific services. The mailed questionnaire will ask the public to evaluate staff courtesy, admission process, nursing staff, physi cians, communication, hospital care, returning home, staff skill and the cleanliness of the facili ty using a three or five point scale. It will allow space for per sonal comments. A similar survey was used recently to evaluate the care patients received in the emer gency departments of both hos pitals. Betty Rose is always thinking of others - like the 120 people who have a developmental handicap and rely on Community Living Oakville. This not-forprofit organization operates 10 group homes, four skill-development programs and runs several special sports and social activities. For the past four years, Betty has spent much of her spare time visiting with the many friends she has made there, accompanying them on outings and helping them however she can. Along with colleague Harold Wrong, Betty rallied support from others she works with to help fix up group homes and gardens, and raised funds on behalf of Community Living. And when the group's Special Olympics T-Ball team needed uniforms, Betty (1 to r) Back: Harold, Blain and Betty. Front: Alfie and David went out and found them. No wonder this year she was asked to participate in their Special Olympics Torch Run.
