For those who didn't read the story, the Kids N Kops program was a mini C u r r e n tly , p a r e n ts police academy for the "little brothers" s e n d th e ir k id s to o f Big Brothers o f Halton. P a rtic ip a n ts w ere e x p o se d to a c o m p u te r c a m p s , s p o r ts variety of experiences from the halton c a m p s , a r ts c a m p , e tc ., Regional Police Bomb Disposal Unit to w hy not a th e T a c tic a l an d R e sc u e U n it to K id s N K ops cam p? Forensics and even the K-9 unit. Actually, we think the Kids N Kops program was such a success, we wonder if it could be expanded. Natural recipients of the programs would be the "little sisters" from the Big Sisters of Halton and wards of the Halton Children's Aid Society. We even wonder if there was any way to expand the program where parents could pay a fee to send their children to a Kids N Kops program. Currently, parents send their kids to computer camps, sports camps, arts camp, etc., why not a Kids N Kops camp? We know this may be simply wishful thinking. After all, the Kids N Kops program was m ade possible through the generosity of everyone involved, including police officers who gave up a week's vacation to run the program. But if there was some way to provide funding through a provincial or regional grant, or through user fees, it would be worth looking into for the future. If not, we hope the program continues next year under its current format. W H A TS H O U L DW ED OW IT HOUR TAX REBATE CHEQUE FROM M IK EH A R R IS W H E N ITCOMES?. Pages of the Past R egional treasurer subm itted resignation 30 Years Ago Proposed hi-rise developments on the lakeshore just west of Sixteen Harbor are good, Mayor McLean Anderson said Monday night. "But that area must have the best possible development. I am not sure that the Revenue and Pinetree and Zupet and Gasparetto plans do present the best possible use for the land; in this case, good is just not good enough," he said. "The question is, can council turn down a good plan, and hope that a better one will come along later?' That is the problem council faces tonight when it meets in special committee session to hear residents' objections to the plans and make a recommendation to council next week. - Daily-Journal Record, August 11th, 1970 20 Years Ago Regional Treasurer Don Farmer has resigned. Regional Council accepted the resignation of Mr. Farmer Wednesday and they adopted a five-part recom m endation based on a report by the management study committee. The treasurer since regional government was formed in 1974, Mr. Farmer submitted his resignation Aug. 1. A report by Chief Administrative Officer Ernie Reid recom m ended that council accept the resignation at Wednesday's council meeting. - Oakville Journal-Record, August 8th, 1980 10 Years Ago Six-year-old Justin W ilbur is one lucky kid lucky that Sue Beatty happened to be at the Bronte Creek Provincial Park pool on Wednesday, of last week. Beatty, who is a trained lifeguard, probably saved Justin's life when she pulled him from the water apparently unconscious and not breathing. "He was either in shock or unconscious," said Beatty. "He was definitely purple. I didn't think he was alive when I pulled him out." Fortunately, however, the boy started breathing on his ow n, and was found to have suffered no permanent injury after being taken to hospital. Justin, who lives on Quilter Court in Burlington, was at the pool as a participant in the Burlington Department of Parks and Recreation's summer activity program. - Oakville Beaver, A ugust 8th, 1990 Taken fro m the archives o f the Oakville Beaver including stories fro m The Oakville Record-Star, The Oakville- Trafalgar Journal, the Oakville Journal Record and the Oakville Beaver.
