A peer support volunteer offers a cup of coffee and invites the gentleman to chat in a cozy, pri vate room. Peer support volunteers are cancer sur vivors and caregivers of cancer patients who are specially trained to provide emo tional and coping support to others who are facing similar situations. This program offers patients the opportunity to speak pri vately and in confidence (in person or by telephone) with som eone who is both empathetic and knowledgeable. Peer sup port volunteers also provide information about Wellspring and the programs and ser vices offered. Peer support is currently available M onday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on M onday evenings on a drop-in basis and no referrals or appointments are necessary. We also have a short term professional counseling service for individuals who may be facing profound and difficult issues related to the diagnosis of cancer. This can help individuals sort through and clarify these concerns so they are not so over whelming as to impair a person's ability to act in their own best interest and to help find the assistance they require. Members have the choice o f either drop ping in to specially designated programs to try them out or to register for a weekly ses sion. Programs are available on both a drop in and a registration basis. . Participants may gain comfort and reas surance from knowing that they are not alone while discovering new ways to cope, to communicate about and to live with can cer.
