In the distance, the sea is a turquoise gem. We are just tucking into a platter o f steam ing scram bled eggs, when the serenity of our Sunday morning breakfast is bro ken, by the sound of a large truck slowly grinding its way up a steep hill. Wait a moment-there are no big trucks on the Bermuda islands. W hat's m ore, in Paget parish, where we are enjoying a winter holiday, there are no steep hills. While these thoughts chase them selves through my confused head, the ice cubes in our water glasses begin to tinkle merrily. Allison and I are experiencing our first earth quake. As quakes go, this one is down right genteel. Any Los Angelenos would take no notice at all. But then, most everything on Bermuda Vis genteel. Tea is served at four, the golf courses are mown with nail clippers, and the tourists get motorbikes with red license plates, so the local drivers can give them a wide berth. Bermuda offers true tourism, as one of the most attractive features of a visit here is to explore by m otorbike. W hether it's a tiny m oped or small m otorcycle, almost everybody here uses them for transport. The roads are smooth and safe, with bridges and causeways to take you from island to island. With all its lands, Bermuda is only 21 miles (35 kms.) long, so a few litres of gaso line will let you travel all day. You can boogie out to the Royal Navy Dockyard at the end of Sandy's Parish in the morning, be pho tographed in the stocks on Ordnance Island in St. George's in the afternoon, and have time for lunch and a snooze on a beach in between. In Bermuda, only the prices are not genteel. "Mon, on these islands, we got fan palms, coconut palms and out stretched palms!" Our tax driver put it so succinctly, bring us from the airport to our hotel. W hat's more, those outstretched palms expect Yankee dollars, making it doubly-painful for Canadian visi tors.
