Park high school, has accepted a sw im m ing scholarship from Southw est M issouri State U niversity. " M ajorahn is a five-tim e individ ual gold m edalist at the OFSAA (O ntario F ederation o f Secondary A thletic A sso ciatio n s) p rovincial cham pionships, including a provin cial record in the 50m etres, set earli er this year in his final O FSA A out ing. M ajorahn will receive a 90 per cent fin an cial package valued at $10,800 U.S., entering a first-year science program with options still open for a career in physical educa tion or veterinary science. With the assistance o f the local o ffic e , o f C o lleg e P ro sp ects o f A m erica, M ajorahn was recruited by 30 colleges and universities across North Am erica. M ajorahn had set out in Grade 9 to break "all the school records." He d id n 't have im m ediate suc cess, m anaging only one individual ju n io r record (the 50m back) as well as sharing one ju n io r relay record (the 4x50m free). But he cam e into his own in the senior grades and m anaged to lock up all eig h t in d iv id u al sen io r records, nabbing the final one (the 200m freestyle) earlier this year. His com plete senior slate includes the 50m free, 100m free, 200m free, 50m back, 100m back, 100m breast, 100m Individual M edley and 50m fly. And he also shares a senior relay record (which he helped set earlier this year as part o f his sch o o l's silver medal w inning 4x50m team at OFSAA). The achievem ent is notable for tw o reasons: · first is that the eight records were previously held by eight d iffe re n t sw im m ers, typically sp e c ia lists in their particu lar stroke; · and second, is that he set it at a school that is a noted provincial pow erhouse. He rewrote a storied record book, not a near empty one that you would find at a new school or one with a new pro gram. M any o f the records he broke were set during a particular gold en period in the m id-eighties at Q.E. Park when they "won three O FSA A cham pionships in a row ," noted coach Jim Bonnell. "And there were some excep Photo by Barrie Erskine tional sw im m ers at the school." And m ost o f them, he reiterat- Miro Majorahn owns every Q.E. Park ed, specialized in a particular senior swim record, stroke or event. M ajorahn also owns four Halton sive. Individually, he has earned five records, three o f them individual gold (three of them in the 50m free (100 breast, 100 I.M. and 50 free) as well as the 100m free and 100m and one shared relay (the above breast). And as a m em ber o f a relay team, he has a junior gold (4x50m noted 4x50m free). His final medal haul at OFSAA free) and the above noted senior sil over the years is also quite im pres ver in the 4x50m free. G'day mates Let the gam es begin. M acLean, who is perhaps best known for hosting Hockey N ight in Canada, is an active and longtim e O akville resident along with wife Cari. Elfi Schlegel runs a grow ing grass roots gym nas tics club in O akville and her students, m any as young as two years old, will, no doubt, be giggling when they see their teacher on television. Schlegel, a Canadian (and U.S. college) gym nastics great has earned one of the top jo b s in her field as a gym nas tics colour com m entator for the host A m erican net work, NBC. The two have a ton o f experience. Including the Sydney O lym pics the two, betw een them, now have nine Olym pic gam es on their journalism resume. So watch, and enjoy.
