Sunday, September 17, 2000 Oakville Beaver Weekend 25 Granlund at top school After receiving numerous scholarship offers, Iroquois Ridge Secondary School grad Adam Granlund is now suiting up for the Seminole State Trojans on a full baseball scholarship. Seminole State, a Division 1 school, finished third in the nation last year. Adam began playing baseball at age six with the Oakville Minor Baseball Association (home of the Oakville A's), playing for nearly a decade, from 1990-98, and developing a strong foundation for skill development. A highlight was an athletic achievement of excellence award from the town of Oakville for his contribution to Oakville's third-place finish at the provincials in 1996. In 1998, the long-time OMBAgrad had his first taste of provincial baseball when he played for the Central Ontario Baseball Association (COBA) midget all-star team which won the prestigious Cannon Cup all-star tournament in Oakville. In 1999, he was chosen to play for the Mississauga Cardinals Baseball Club, which played in the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC), Connie Mack Ontario division, finishing with a team record of 47 wins, 11 losses and one tie. He played in the Long Island Fall. Classic for the Ontario Blue Jays, pitching three scoreless innings against the Bayside Yankees and finished with a record of four wins and two losses. This year, he was picked for the COBA junior all-star team to play in a Toronto Blue Jay sponsored tournament, pitching 6 1/3 innings in the championship game at the SkyDome, and recording seven strike outs to secure the win and earn MVP hon ours. Over the July 15/16th weekend, he was invited to try out for the Team Ontario Juniors in Waterloo. Going up against some of the best 18 to 21-year-old pitchers in the province, he earned himself a spot on the team, and a chance to represent Team Ontario at the Canada Games in London next year. On July 19th at Oakville Park, pitching two innings for his COBA all-star team against the Team Canada Jr's, he recorded three strikeouts, no hits or walks. On July 21st, Adam was on the mound at the SkyDome for Team Ontario against the Team Australia Juniors, recording simi lar numbers. Adam would like to express his thanks to Ray Niejadlik of the Mississauga Cardinals, Joe Parisani of the Ontario Blue Jays, Duane Walton of the Oakville A's and to Remo Cardinale, manager of the Canadian Junior Team, who helped him to fine tune his skills. Also to Oliver of Oliver Chimney Services, Mauritzio Marriotti, and family and friends for their support. ED. The road to the provincials started back in April with spring tryouts and along the way, the A's developed their skills not just individually but as a team. Their hard work was rewarded. The A's captured the prestigious St. Catharines tournament in June and were the run ners-up at the annual Niagara Falls tourney in August. After finishing the regular season with a win ning record, the A's went on to face Clarkson for the Central Ontario Baseball Association champi onship. The A's won the best-of-three series in two straight on Aug. 11/12. The provincials were held in Thornhill with nine teams from across the province in the mix. Oakville went 2-1 in the preliminary round, opening up with wins of 5-1 over Oshawa and 62 over Markham and then losing 4-3 to Kitchener. It was good enough to advance to the semifi nal round where they drew Oshawa and beat them once again, this time 5-3. That put them into the championship game, against Kitchener again. And unfortunately, that re-match also turned out the same with Kitchener winning 6-2. "The boys played three days of excellent base ball," said coach Rob Howden. "Whether on the field or at the plate, everyone made a contribution to the success the team had over the weekend." Added coach Mike Paciuc: "I'm extremely proud of the boys and their accomplishments. They represented themselves, their parents, their town and the Oakville Minor Baseball Association with dignity and poise. HOCKEY PLAYERS 19 YRS AND OVER ...
